A rare but welcome visit to Gérald Chacheux in Vosne-Romanée. This remains a small domaine with 3 hectares of vines, including a little Passetoutgrains and regionals, a couple of villages wines and also a couple of 1er crus. Their two Vosne parcels are blended, the same with 2 parcels from Chambolle – then there’s the 1er crus of Suchots and Beaumonts from Vosne.
Gérald on his 2021s:
“There’s not a lot of malic acid but it shows a little today. We had two frosts and it was the second, a week later, that affected our aligoté as it was a little ahead in terms of growth – the rest of our vines were fine…”
The wines…
Too early to say whether the wines are great or not but there was much to admire with this tasting:
We were tasting 2021s as their 2020s had all been allocated – not all the malos done were completed. The Bourgogne was planted about 1999, the Chambolle vines are 40+ years-old. The Vosne villages were planted in 1990+1995, Beaux Monts in the 1950s, and finally, Les Suchots one part in the 1980s, the rest also from the 1950s:
2021 Bourgogne Côte d’Or Champs d’Argent
Bright, vibrant fruit. It’s vibrant, fresh, in the mouth too.
2021 Chambolle-Musigny
‘In 16 and 17 they did two cuvées of Chambolle because one is next to Musigny – ‘Argillieres’ – the couple of vintages after they were assembled, but now we can micro vinify so I’m doing both again. This is the one from high on the hill:’
More power to this nose, starting with a faint reduction and then opening wider and ever more perfumed. Wide, more weight and finer balanced than the previous wine with a fine and elegant middle and finishing flavour and texture.
2021 Chambolle-Musigny Les Argillières
More aromatic energy and a little more malo showing. Also vibrantly flavoured, the acidity more direct, the malo flavour visible too. But here is a more chalky style to the extra weight of middle and finishing flavour. The tannin is visible but with no grain – this will need a little more time but should definitely be worth it.
2021 Vosne-Romanée
That’s the most ready and elegant nose – that’s a beauty. Again vibrant – just a beautiful energy – really a very fine villages. Vibrant energy throughout.
2021 Vosne-Romanée 1er Les Beaux Monts
More width of aroma but a bit more gas too. Becoming rounder, heavily floral perfumed but always improving – thats really super. More direct, a wine of texture and energy – widening with an extra level of complexity. I find the style similar to 2017.
2021 Vosne-Romanée 1er Les Suchots
Starting slightly reductive – broad at the base, less round more airy elegance. Extra width, saline, previse, a more mineral, another level of complexity and broadening flavour – thats simply excellent wine and a bit more structure to wait for – super!
