Medium cherry-red colour. Aromaticly a little tight. High-toned ripe fruit in the mouth with faint tannin and good acidity – very pretty.

Medium-plus ruby-red. The nose is deep with wider mineral notes, an edge of spice and just a little uncouth ‘lifted’ alcoholic top-notes. A little fat that overlays plenty of tannin – it’s quite fine though. Good depth and a good length. This is reminiscent more of 1997’s with a slight lack of freshness – though funnily most of Rion’s 97 are almost good. It’s okay but I wouldn’t buy more.

Medium colour, still trying to hold onto that last trace of cherry red. The nose shows a little rosemary, red-berry fruit and the last traces of of spicy oak. From cellar-temp this has some furry tannin and an overall nice texture. Elegant fruit of almost good concentration (way over bourgogne level) and super length – though the length has a little oaky bitterness about it. As the wine warms the nose becomes clearer and wider (very nice) the palate also becomes wider, less bitter in the finish but becomes less obviously fresh – just about the only area it shows up the vintage. Much better than I expected!
1998 Rion Daniel Nuits St.Georges Les Lavières
Medium-plus ruby core with a lighter cherry-red rim. The nose has deep plummy tones with just a trace of oak influence. The wine is smooth and sweet with nicely concentrated red fruits and well mannered tannins. The acidity is just right, helping the finish to hang on just that little bit longer. Young, but quite a smoothie for a village Nuits.
1998 Rion Daniel Côte de Nuits Villages Le Vaucrain
Medium-plus ruby colour, some development and a little amber at the rim. The nose comes mainly from the well toasted wood with coffee and roast nuts in evidence, faint powdery plum in the background. The palate is sweet and medium bodied with a slight rasp to the medium tannins and almost good acidity. Again you’ll notice the wood more than the fruit. Personally I prefer to taste the fruit, but if you like sweet toasted oak in the style of a certain pastry chef – you’ll love this.
