2005 Bertagna Clos St.Denis

By on March 31, 2009 #asides

Medium, medium-plus colour. A nose of macerating cherries, slightly alcoholic but focused. Full in the mouth with concentrated fruit and equally concentrated, reasonably fine and ripe tannin. Very nice fruit that hints at an extra creamy dimension and lovely acidity. This wine has plenty of muscle and I wouldn’t hesitate to leave it another 10 years, yet was a tasty wee dram. Very good.

Again, almost no nose. A lovely palate – real extra dimension from the mid-palate onwards. The length and balance are first rate. This is a very fine wine.

Closed. Not fat, rather supple and lithe. Concentrated with lovely depth and intensity plus almost good tannins. Not as ‘big’ as the Clos St.Denis but there’s great poise to this wine – lovely.

Tight, perhaps a little creamy red fruit. High-toned fruit in the mouth. Refreshing acidity and good structure – some power too. Just a little austere, but surely very fine as a minimum.

2004 Bertagna Corton Les Grands Lolières

Tight, coffee-edged fruit. Sweet palate with super depth to the fruit. Plenty of grippy tannin but the overall wine is quite well balanced. Big and muscular – but with manners. A very good wine.

Has a lovely creamy edge to the nose – in fact it’s almost the only wine with any aromatics! Intense and long this is a real beauty who’s fruit puts on a real extra grand cru burst in the mid-palate that slowly fades into the finish. This is a very good wine.

Medium-pale lemon-yellow, edged with green. Lovely depth to the nose, starts with a whisp of aniseed, leaving cream-edged citrus fruit against fresh bread. The beautifully clean palate is linear, ripe and sweet, and really expands from the mid-palate into the strong finish. No obvious oak influence, save for a creamy element. Very fine intensity. Young, obviously, but very tasty. A wine to drink now or save 5+ years.

2002 Bertagna Clos de Vougeot

Mainly from 70 year-old vines. Almost as dark as the Perrières. The nose is complex and broad, though not particularly deep. Intense fruit – very much so on the mid-palate. Good acidity and well covered tannins. The tannins are pretty silky – sort of halfway between the Petits Vougeots and the Perrières. Another very good wine.
