On the 2019 vintage:
The balance of 19 is super – we have lovely acidity, though the alcohols are higher than usual – 14.5° for the Bourgogne, mid to late 13s for the others – maybe it will help with US taxes! We are already down about 30%, we had the black frost on 5 April, some went out to light candles at 1am and the frost was already there! We kept the aligoté this year, it was 13.8°!

On the 2018 vintage:
2018, for us, was a big surprise. We started harvesting 02 September, seemingly late compared to some – we had decided to wait for the rain which had been forecast – but it didn’t come! With the very first press there was more juice than we had anticipated – all the talk had been about thick skins and the need to press strongly to have a good amount of juice – it wasn’t like that. We had close to 13 degrees, and whilst the balance was not bad, for one or two cuvées I chose to add a little acid. It seems a good vintage.

The wines…

A decent set of wines in 2018 that show the easy attraction of the vintage across the whole range.

2018 Bourgogne Chardonnay Côte d’Or
All from the commune of Puligny – from just across the road from the domaine – 60 year-old vines.
Open, fresh, good clarity. Hmm, that’s nice – depth of cushioned mineral flavour with an accent of barrel. Long and concentrated finishing. Ooh, that’s a super Bourgogne! Phenolic touch on the end of the tongue.

2018 Puligny-Montrachet Les Tremblots
At the limit of Puligny with Chassagne.
A much finer, wider nose, a touch of barrel but with good ripe citrus too. Open, a hint of gas, layered, delicious. Still some oak but this is very tasty wine – excellent! A lovely mouth-watering finish.

2018 Puligny-Montrachet Les Charmes
This time at the limit of Puligny with Meursault.
Ooh – classic, fresh, spiced Meursault nose! This is open, tasty, nicely spiced, delicious wine again – this time the oak isn’t showing. Long finishing. Actually the Tremblots is a more delicious wine today, despite its oak, but usually I prefer this with any age!

2017s:
These were bottled in April:

2017 Bourgogne Côte d’Or
Airy, fresh pure, clarity – like the 18. lovely, it’s concentrated, has drive, and a delicious mouth-watering style. Bravo Bourgogne.

2017 Puligny-Montrachet Les Tremblots
Ooh thats an open and vibrant nose – lovely. Open, nice shape, tatsy wine, lingering well – love the shape of this!

2017 Puligny-Montrachet Les Charmes
Hmm, less overtly spiced than the 18, but a nice airy perfume. Extra depth, nice shape a little jore rochness of flavour here., long, faintly tannic textured, ooh now thats a beautiful middle and finish – delicious. Always good quality
