More reports with Domaine Antonin Guyon
Hombeline & Vincent on 2022 and 2021:
“In 2022 we’ve already had some hail here in Savigny and a little in Gevrey – but currently, things are not looking too bad. By contrast, 2021 is only about half a harvest – yes we had a little mildew in Gevrey and Charlemagne but mainly it was the frost that was to blame.”
Hombeline & Vincent on 2020:
“Also a modest volume harvest – a little below average. It was also a very early harvest; we were already harvesting in August. Fortunately not very much needed to be triaged as the quality of the grapes was very fine. All is now bottled – up to 16 months of elevage and as low as 10 months sometimes for the Hautes Côtes”
The domaine produces 90% red wine – 75% is exported to more than 50 countries. It used to be DIAMs just for the two Bourgognes but now the domaine’s Pernand-Vergelesses is also sealed with DIAM30.
The wines…
A domaine that consistently produces excellent wines, often some great wines. I note the oak spice more this year but it will fade – there are some genuinely great wines here that are worth a special search.
All the wines were bottled:
2020 Domaine Guyon, Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Les Dames de Vergy
From near Nuits St.Georges. 20 hectares of high trained vines here. Not needed to chaptalize for a number of years and have higher degrees than in Chambolle. Half of this sees tank elevage.
Plenty of aromatic intensity – dark berries with impressive purity. Supple, impressively concentrated but with waves of mouth-watering flavour – this is far too easy to drink! – just the merest darker minerality and bitters in the finish. It’s simply an excellent Bourgogne in this vintage.
A broader nose with extra energy – I really like the dark aromatic complexity here. More fluid in the mouth – the shape is slightly more structural but the wine moves beautifully over the palate. I would give this a little cellar time, perhaps the oak is speaking for today – but the shape and mouth-watering energy are compelling – certainly excellent – potentially great Savigny in 4-5 years.
2020 Gevrey-Chambertin La Justice
Hmm – instantly more attractive despite slightly lower order of energy – instantly inviting fruit complexity too – yes! A burst of flavour energy, faintly saline, so mouth-watering with a cascade of lovely flavour – again accented by the barrel – this time more creamy, tending towards vanilla – approaching 25% new here. I don’t want to taste the vanilla so I will wait 3-5 years – but this is really a high-level villages wine!
2020 Aloxe-Corton 1er Les Fournières
Very stony soil, plenty of silex too.
Freshness, faint spice – probably from the oak. Hmm – incisive, juicy, even slightly mineral. The subtle structure of a baby Corton – for sure – but with a softer, more elegant starting point than from most Corton. Holding lots of finishing persistence
2020 Aloxe-Corton 1er Les Vercots
Here is an extra depth to the soil.
A large nose, perfumed too. More direct, and more mineral, with small waves of flavour in the finish. I like this a lot – it’s my style of wine – less obviously structured than the previous wine despite the direct style. Simply super wine…
Here’s a little oak-spice mixed into the freshness. Impact and energy – a wine of power without weight – a clarity of flavour(s) here. Intense finishing – impressively so. That’s a real step up – proper grand cru with a beautifully finishing, melting, style of finishing flavour with impressive clarity. There’s about 30% whole clusters here. That’s more than excellent Corton – no excess…
2020 Corton Clos du Roy
Horse-powered ploughing here, in the 60 year-old vines.
A broader nose – there’s even a little smokiness here – more from the stems here than the barrels I think. Here is more energy than the Bressandes – a more architectural shape – nothing hard, just impressive. That’s a very, very fine wine – it’s usually the best here but I think the Bressandes is much closer than I usually remember… Super wine!
Les blancs:
2020 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Sous Fretille
This starts with a little spice over a wide mineral base. Some mineral rigour too but more and more width, a ripe, mouth-watering citrus. Let the rigour fade over 12-18 months
2020 Meursault 1er Charmes Dessus
Cork.
Hmm – now that’s such a beautiful nose clean, complex, inviting. Super in the mouth, mineral, pure, mouth-wateringly complex – that’s a very, very fine Charmes – simply excellent, indeed great finishing!
Vines next to Faiveley in Renardes and next to Domaine des Croix.
Yes! Here is density but absolute purity – so compelling. In the mouth too – a wonderful balance of weight and clarity of flavour – the energy is perfect. Wider, mouth-watering. It’s a great Charlemagne – as is so often the case from here!
