More reports for Domaine David Moreau.
David on 2020:
“We had a good season, some sectors suffered from the heat but we had a bit more rain than some places and suffered much less. I prune very late to minimise the risk from frost, but some a bit too late – we lost volume because of that. I didn’t need to do many treatments, despite a storm here and there – the last big one was in mid-July then a couple of smaller ones in August. We harvested in August but not too early and we had really lovely acidities. So overall, 2020 is not a huge volume – medium-small – but the vines weren’t stressed as we did get enough rain here in Santenay.”
The wines…
Once more, a super range from David Moreau – at this stage showing plenty of structural aspects but there are some properly great wines for their labels here too!
2020 Bourgogne Pinot Noir Sous Montot
A single vineyard on west-facing soil. We have to pick a little later but I prefer that to making a Bourgogne in the deeper soils.
Faint but beautifully perfumed aromatics. Direct, slightly structured, wait 1-2 years but very high quality here.
2020 Côte de Beaune Villages
A hint of wc in this. From three parcels at the foot of the hills between Santenay and Chassagne – declassified Santenay.
Declassified Santenay from deeper soils near Chassagne – 3 climats blended.
Fine, a little more direct, lovely fruit purity. Wider, structural again, more finishing depth of flavour. Structural again and delicious.
2020 Maranges Au Gryphée
A mix of premier and village wine with a bit more whole bunch
Vibrant darker fruit, a vibration of oak and maybe wc spice. Extra depth of structural tannin, almost no grain. Like all so far, super but keep your patience.
2020 Santenay Les Hâtes
Planted originally by David’s grandfather – a big lieu-dit, this from the hillside’s south-facing slope. ‘It resembles Santenay Clos des Mouches and was sold to the négoce. For a long time, it was very vigorous but now I’m happy with the results.
All vilkages on the south-facing slope.
Again, fine and pure red fruit notes – no spice this time. Direct, super structure and fine texture – a little extra depth to those flavours. Again a super wine to wait for…
2020 Santenay cuvée S
Two parcels, one in Les Cornières (mainly) and one smaller one in Les Charmes.
More depth of aroma and an impression of tannin in the width. Supple, mouth-watering, just a hint more accessible from a structure perspective.
More open and aromatic. Fluid, mobile, lots of concentration. Super shape – long, fine bitters – thats a great villages…
Planted in 1990 but not the balance that David liked until 2016 – the first vintage.
Fine clarity of fruit – easily the best so far – a little floral too – everything. Fresh, direct only slowly widening. Great structure. Open deliciously flavoured – bravo – and already no shame to drink now!
Meagre soil, sometimes only 10cm. 15-20% wc like in the Cuvée S.
The best nose – more complexity of fine floral perfume. Extra energy, extra juicy, great wine – deliciously juicy!
2020 Santenay 1er Beauregard
The vines on a steep slope here.
Broader and higher-toned aromatics. Fuller on the mouth but never heavy or rich – the tannin is more visible but not with grain. I think the extra wc talking here but another excellent wine.
2020 Santenay 1er Clos des Mouches
Between Hâtes and Gravières but here is lower on the slope, still mid-slope with redder soils and some hard limestone. Just 3 ha so not a lot of producers.
A narrower nose but with even prettier high tones – beautiful clarity and with lots of flowers. Hmm, extra depth, supple again, a more generous and melting flavour – beautiful wine.
Les Blancs:
2020 Bourgogne Aligoté
Lots of aromatic energy, certainly a little rigour. Vibrant and slightly saline, hmm, quite chalky texture in the finish.
2020 Santenay Les Prarons Blanc
Near Chassagne, lots of millerandes.
Width, a little more comfortable depth to these aromas. The shape more comfortable and accessible – here is such a really great middle and finishing impression that mixes mouth-watering minerality and energy – love.
2020 Santenay 1er Beaurepaire Blanc
All 350 l barrels
Less forward aromatics but with a width of silk. Fine, bubbling energy, concentration but so accessible and mouthwatering- completely delicious
2020 Meursault Les Pellans
Bottom of the hill bellow Charmes, old vines with lots of virus so tiny millerande grapes.
A different aromatic style that’s narrower and more focused. Wide, mouth-filling and energetic, vibrant, tasty wine.
