François on his recent vintages:
“For this year – 2023 – I’m happy so far – though the grapes are still small – steady as she goes… 22 was good quality we are mainly full! In 2021, it was the Bourgogne that had the best volume – 2/3rds normal – and it was quite variable with the reds. The 1er crus were already growing before the frost and we lost roughly 2/3rds of those. All that said, yes, I like 2021 very much; For Poruzots and Genevrières, it was hard to keep some of these lieu-dits as we had only 500-litres but we had 500-litre barrels. so …”
The wines…
François doesn’t have very much in 2021 – but what he has is worth a search!
Starting with the reds:
2021 Bourgogne Rouge Côte d’Or
A lovely width of aromas. Supple, really concentrated, saline, wide finishing, frank finishing… Very yum!
2021 Monthelie Les Toisières
A new cuvée since 2018. Some of the domaine’s Monthelie has been pulled up and will be replanted with white – but they are keeping this.
Silky, smoky aromas. There’s more tannin framing the flavours. This is a chunky, tasty wine!
3 small parcels combined – all in the plain, the Cras part quite stony.
More width and ripeness. Supple, beautifully textured and showing delicious depth. Ooh! That’s a great Pommard!
Hmm , more airy and red-fruited – super inviting. Supple again, lovely shape with mobile flavour – and there’s depth to that flavour too. A superb extra dimension of finishing flavour to remember it by. That’s a simply excellent wine, indeed it’s a great 21…
Les Whites…
1929 vines, just other side of RN from Grand Clous Perrons – Only tank, no new wood for elevage
Actually rather perfumed. Incisive but still with balancing depth and concentration. So juicy and almost alive. Thats a great aligoté!
2021 Bourgogne Chardonnay Côte d’Or
4 parcels around Meursault – both sides of the village
Extra breadth, with faintly honied aromas. Extra vibrant, more-so even than the aligote. Easy finishing. Very good wine.
Purchased grapes but team picked – up high so 10 days later harvesting than in Meursault
More floral, almost a little lime fruit too. Super vibrant, lots of green-shaded citrus. That’s a great wine!
2021 Meursault
A mixture of Pellans, Pelland Dessus, Chaimes de Narvaux and a bit of Meix Chaveaux this vintage – from their 7-8 parcels.
A lovely citrus aroma but more yellow than green. Wide, vibrant again, super intensity. It begs you to take another sip!
2021 Meursault Tillets
The youngest vines, the highest vines, just under the wood between the parcels of Alain Gras & Denis Carré.
Much more airy nose with some white flower complexity. Here’s another big mouthfull of juicy flavour, faintly spiced, rounder but no less intense and inviting. Yum!
Near the camping – actually a clos – a cuvée here since 2019…
More direct but also more floral. Also more direct flavours – very fine texture – an absolute beauty! Richer again but absolutely juicy too. Great wine.
20% of this is in the village, 28-years-old average for the vines
More classically Meursault aromatics with a faint ginger spice. A little more visible ateucture but always with sufficient balance. That’s another top wine!
2021 Meursault Le Limozin
Under Genevrières near Charmes
A more textured width of aroma, faintly floral too. Ooh – gorgeous on the mouth – forward, faintly grained. Beautifully fading – I love it!
2021 Meursault 1er Les Poruzots
A mineral, slightly reductive accent to this nose. More muscular, intense, with weight of flavour. And so broad and lasting on the finish. Super! ‘Sweet and salt every year.‘
2021 Meursault 1er Aux Charmes
Vines planted in 1930 and 1998 the different parcels, one bottom, the other in the middle of Charmes.
An extra weight of aroma at the core and a fabulous last floral flash! Hmm – yes! Texture, width and deliciousness!
A higher toned, more overtly floral invitation. The structure is more visible but not really strict. Open, a little saline in the finish – beautiful.
Vines sitting between those of Francois Buisson and Latour-Giraud
More airy, finer too, less aromatic impact though. The most vibrant and complex flavour profile so far. Almost a steely finishing intensity. Great wine!
Still 80% of that original plantation remain productive.
The oak more present but this is still a silky width of aroma. Hmm, some similarities to the Genevrières but with an extra dose of calm despite the energy. The most impressive finish of all!
There is one response to “François Mikulski – 2021”
Had François’ 2021 aligoté last night as apéritif. Magnificient. So elegant. Really fine. Who says Burgundy is expensive! Less than 40$ for a wine made from a top vigneron from vines close to 100 years old! Still a few little gems here and there… Thanks Bill for helping us find them!
