Sabine on 2021:
We lost 60%!

Sabine on 2022:
We hoped for more after a year of frost, and we started the year with plenty of grapes – but it was dry. So we got a decent yield but not a big one. But I’m very happy with the freshness – we couldn’t have expected it, given the warm summer. Our Bourgogne and Chassagne will be for bottling in August, the 1ers will have a few months in tank after their racking so will wait until January to be bottled.

The wine…

A seriously under-rated domaine – and their quasi-monopole of Virondot brings a wine that is almost always a wine worth a special search…

All bottled and all sealed with natural cork:

2022 Bourgogne Chardonnay
Some négoce from Hautes Côtes, bought as grapes, to go with domaine vines in Chassagne.
A nice width of aroma – there’s some Chassagne depth and and a riper stone fruit width. Lovely – there’s a mouth-filling shape and some slightly salty minerality that pervades the finishing flavours. This is a super finish!

2022 Chassagne-Montrachet
Also bottled – three parcels; Lombards, Pierre and Blanchots and a little declassified 1er from Virondots.
More airy and more floral too – lovely. Incisive, more energy, more minerality. A slight richness to the middle flavours but always with fine precision – simply excellent with plenty of citrus skin in this finish

2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Chenevottes
The aromatic oak is much more obvious but not too sweet. Extra width and a little more density to the flavours too. More complex for sure and with plenty of generosity, yet still with energy and precision. Keep 4-5 years for the oak to fade. Excellent stony length!

2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Vergers
A more vertical nose, more floral too. Still with some oak but it’s less overt. Starting direct, these flavours growing wider and wider – the middle and finish are more overtly stony and fresh – a haunting stony finish… That’s a beauty.

2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er En Virondot
More freshness again, a complexity of citrus fruit. The best mix of movement and texture in the mouth – becoming citrus-juicy. Simply a top wine.

2020 Puligny-Montrechet 1er Pucelles
Vines close to those of Batard
Rounder aromatics with sweet oak. Hmm – beautifully vibrant flavour of both depth and energy – right now the oak is present but not too demanding. Hmm – that’s a wine with scale and energy, just a little less muscular – this has more depth and complexity in the finish – a great finish. Another super 2022 but my personal style favourite is the Virondot.

And for the road:

2018 Puligny-Montrachetr 1er Les Referts
Hmm – 95%of the oak is gone – here’s a roundness of aroma. Hmm, vibrant and mineral with a slight caramel – the small vibration and minerality, faintly with aniseed, making a super finish. Lovely wine!
