Pascale on 2022:
“2022 & 2021 I’m very happy. In 21 we lost 30% and that was a band of hail south of Nuits – but we still had 70-75%. In 2022 we can be happy too – we have wine – we could have made more! We’re also using the first 700-litre barrel I’ve seen – yes we were surprised too – not just that, we now have 2 of them! We’ve been using larger barrels since 2019 – we started with 2 and now there are many – it just helps so much with the oak…”
The wines…
It’s always been such a pleasure to taste here since I first discovered their 2012s – as always, there are wines here that are worthy of a special search!
We taste only the 2022s where the malos have completed – ie not all of them!
2022 Nuits St.Georges Les Charmottes
‘Planted North-South and was penalised by the sun for this in 2022’ says Pascale. Malo done – but not for all – so we taste the ones where ot’s finished. This all destemmed
A faint reduction but lots of depth to this nose. Hmm – supple, deeply flavoured – really concentrated. Wow – concentration – I’d like a bit more energy but this is so generous.
2022 Nuits St.Georges Aux Allots
Hmm – broad – a little more aromatic energy. Such a concentrated wine again – slightly gummy tannin but no grain. Broad finishing again but extra freshness and energy – peppery finishing. Super wine!
This the old-vine parcel, planted in three stages: 1904, 1929 and 1937 – in this vintage half destemmed
A beautiful, concentrated and sophisticated dark nose. More direct, classy and mouth-watering. Faintly framed with some tannic texture.. Depth to this finishing flavour – a little more savoury here – simply excellent wine – potentially a great one!
2022 Nuits St.Georges 1er Les Vaucrains
A tiny reduction but the nose slowly fills the glass as it takes up air – it’s a beauty! Large-scale wine but never heavy wine. Simply a beauty.
A little of the barrel and some reduction brings an almost chocolate nose to start – then slowly more floral elements and then perfume – that’s great. Hmm – concentrated yet more fluid. Very accessible but also very complex, modestly spiced and a hint saline too. This is more complex and very, very attractive. Today I might drink the Vaucrains but tomorrow this!
So let’s try some 2021s – bottled at the end of February and into March this year…
2021 Nuits St.Georges Papillon de Nuys
Starts reductive, air brings energy, a faintly metallic phase and then vibrant raspberry – yes! There’s reduction on the palate too – carafe this – but it’s a structurally very attractive wine with a wide wave of finishing flavour.
2021 Nuits St.Georges Aux Allots
A much more open nose – very inviting. That’s lovely in the mouth – and not lacking a bit of concentration – that’s just a very delicious, beautiful wine.
2021 Nuits St.Georges 1er Rue de Chaux
Hmm – a bit more structure to this nose. Direct, silky, becoming more velvet as the tannin starts to rise to the surface. Juicy and red in the middle – simply super wine – one with a great finish!
2021 Nuits St.Georges 1er Aux Thorey
Ooh – what a wonderful nose – faintly, nobly, reductive but with such a lovely flavour energy – a great nose. Depth of flavour, faintly saline – concentrated and complex this is a powerful mid-palate then a great finish – almost great wine!
