As we didn’t have the time to catch up during my trips to Chablis in January and April, I called in in a period of much more clement weather to see how he was going on – there was a bunch of bottling underway – and to see what he might consider ready to taste.

It also meant that I could take a foto without a thick coat and his woolly hat !!

The wines…

Just a few wines – but very delicious wines!

2019 Chablis Vent d’Ange
Bottled end of 2022 with 36 months elevage.
Pale colour. Lovely depth of aroma – quite ripe but fresh yellow citrus. Supple, mouth-filling, I sense without overtly tasting some creaminess of oak – but this texture is beautiful. The finish extending, mineral and with such an impressive finish – this goes so long. That’s a great villages!
2018 Chablis 1er Butteaux
This, from the second bottling of this wine – done June 2022
Hmm – very different, this nose of more golden citrus with a sizzle a vibration of energy – saline too – that’s a great invitation. Expansive, cool, also a super texture, this with the faintest touch of tannin. Super intensity – never painful but always insistent. A breadth of almost spiced citrus and mineral to finish – also very long – more haunting and airy than the 2019. Gorgeous wine!

2018 Chablis 1er Beauregard
Bottled September 2021. 1.7 hectares – ‘Sol magnifique’ – but it needs harvesting later.
Fresh and wide top notes that are accented with a complexity of cooking herbs – bouquet garni. A very different shape, more mobile, more high toned – it’s almost like there is the juice of the fruit – slightly exotic. A finish that fits between those of the previous two – more weight, more power than the Butteaux – but only very slowly fading – hmm – what a completely different character.

2021 Irancy Vallée de Coigny
The colour is modest but the nose is far from – airy but with a very attractive development to the open red fruit – complex more than ‘fruity’ – air helping fill the glass with lovely perfume. Supple, obviously a cooler vintage than some of the previous cuvées but this airy fruit is delicious, the texture is lovely too. Here is a wine that I would happily drink today – “It’s the vintage that I’ve most macerated but it’s the one with the most limpid colour!
