Alice on 2022 and 2021:
“2022 was a good volume for the domaine, grapes of good quality and all organic certified. It was far from an easy vintage though as we had to be vigilant in the cuverie to avoid volatiles etcetera because the pHs were quite high – we needed rigour in the cuverie. The last 3 vintages that I’ve been here have all been totally different – heavy tannic wines were the potential in 20, 21 had the freshness but also the complications of the vintage…
“As for the 2021 whites – really low – we can say 16 hl/ha on average. As a rule we don’t do triage with whites but in 2021 it was necessary due to the various maladies – we did some very long elevage with lees in this vintage. 21s are sealed with DIAM – 22s will also be with a technical cork but a different producer. The following all bottled in April”
The wines…
Impressive reds from 2022. The 2021 whites was a smaller selection of the many cuvées of the domaine – and some were showing a little asparagus aromas – like 2011 Chablis and one or two 2020 Chablis too – so not something I would recommend.
The bottling of these 2022s is planned for the end of the year but they will see how the wines develop. All the red wines tasted were from 2022. They were destemmed except for the Corton and with no added sulfur before the malo was finished. Practically only remontage was used in 2022 ‘as the colours extracted so quickly:‘
2022 Bourgogne Pinot Noir
Like the white with this label, a mix of local grapes and those from the Chalonnaise – 25% wc
Direct, red fruit with a little structure. In the mouth there is intensity, some perfume and a lip-smacking of faint bitters in the finish. For keeping a while…
2022 Chassagne-Montrachet
All bottom of Chassagne – Between 3 and 4 hectares of vines from multiple parcels.
Extra sweetness still with an impression of structure but no rigour in this case. Hmm – fleshy, deep, great shape and quite a dynamic flavour, with a good slowly fading, mouth-watering style. This will be super.
2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Concis du Champs
Middle of the vines below the village of Chassagne. ‘We separate because we think it not just a more interesting place, it’s also our oldest vines in villages 30% wc – elevage in 350-litre barrels.’
There’s plenty of perfume from the stems, I sense some oak here too. Supple, more generous but flavour that melts over the palate – very fine finishing tannin and an extra level of juiciness in these finishing flavours. Give it 2-3 years to start with – I think potentially excellent wine…
2022 St.Aubin 1er La Charmois
More direct and with darker fruit – the most perfumed so far. Structural wine – with a tannin but grainless tannin – the effect is more of a drag to the texture. The finish slightly furry… Wait for this but you will be rewarded.
Les 2021 Whites:
A quick look at a few bottled wines:
2021 Bourgogne Chardonnay
Foudre elevage.
A powdery nose with some sweetness. Some modest richness but also some hints of asparagus. Sweet finishing though.
2021 Chassagne-Montrachet
This from the bottom of Chassagne, multiple parcels with a high proportion of clay.
Also a nose with a modest cushion, cleaner, no asparagus. Hmm, I like the direct, mineral, energetic style from this – it’s hidden on the nose by a sweetness of oak but this has a nicely steely intensity.
2021 Chassagne-Montrachet En Pimonts
Which is high on the hill north of the quarry/stone-works
Hmm – the asparagus aroma for the Bourgogne was very subtle but here it’s clear. I love the energy and shape of this but the asparagus is present again – and really not my idea of fun.
2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Les Chenevottes
From 3 parcels.
Again with a cushioned sweetness of oak. Beautiful across the palate, silken, vibrant – complex and long – that’s super but wait a couple of years for the aromatic oak to fade – I really love this one!
