Marie-France on 2016:
Well, we had frost of-course. In Vosne-Romanée we are pretty happy in the end, but other appellations were more difficult. Actually, since 2010 it’s been hard. In the end we were at least 30% down for the 2016s, but only 25% remained of the Grands Echézeaux, I’m afraid.

“The best thing about 2016 in the end was the grapes – they were beautiful, almost no triage was necessary. This year, so-far, and fingers crossed, is looking okay.

The wines…

Most malos were done in March, will just rack before assembling. Marie-France hasn’t decided when to bottle, but not much will happen before January.

The 2015s are mainly sold and the 2016s shown here are really month or two too away from being truly ‘appraisable’ but a couple of wines still shone…

2016 Bourgogne Pinot Noir
Some in Chambolle, but at the bottom of the village where the frost was less, so there’s still a cuvée. There are 3-4 parcels blended, between vosne and nuits, and flagey – 2 ha worth – all destemmed.
Modest, colour but a far from a modest nose – forward, textured – really super inviting. Round, a little reductive flavour, nicely textured, a little lacking in energy today but it’s a good, tasty mouthful of wine all the same. The last drops in the glass smell lovely.

2016 Ladoix Buisson
Also a very modest colour. More oak spice here, red fruit in attendance. A little gas, but also more energy and dimension of flavour. No reduction in the flavours where there’s plenty of barrel but lots of nice flavour. Yum lovely tasty finish.

2016 Chambolle-Musigny Mombies
Just a little more colour. A modest nose but seemingly silky. A little gas and reductive flavour. The mid-palate and finish are very promising though – floral, wide and enjoyable. Likewise the last drops in the glass have fine flowers.

The domaine’s Vosne-Romanée is the assembly of a dozen, or so, lieu dits all with separate elevage. Only 5-6 barrels of an old vine parcel will be kept separate. I tasted some interesting parts but as they will be assembled I won’t give you all those notes.

2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Les Petits Monts
0.46 hectares
A very attractive nose, modest colour but not a modest nose. Floral hints here. Some gas, a palate with a little herb but nice texture and modest tannin. There’s really an extra dimension of finishing depth and complexity. Super but, overall, modest compared to other producers – yet this is really a finesse wine.

2016 Grands-Echézeaux
Such a tiny cuvée this year.
Pow! Big aroma. Amplitude. Complexity – what a nose! Young in the mouth, some oak, but lots of complexity again. Another wine that belies its modest colour – really big on flavour with that almond style fruit complexity that I associate with GE – from that perspective bravo!
