2018 A lockdown value summary

3.6.2020billn

lockdown-april-2020I couldn’t go to the producers, but some of their efforts could come to me – of course, with the vagaries of the Swiss Post Office and customs, so some stuff never made it it to Bern.

The aim of these tastings was to look at the values, as I see them, from the 2018 vintage – hopefully with plenty of new names for you too. The tastings were done in the second part of May 2020 with samples that were kindly provided by the producers. There was very little attempt on my part to order the wines, so sometimes better wines preceded more important ones.

You will have noted from my October to February reports that whites did quite well – certainly better than I had anticipated. For reds it was much more complicated; Beaujolais was good to excellent but the Côte d’Or was ‘all over the place.’ The problem for the Côte d’Or extended to the Bourgognes too – they are mainly from the plains, the foot of the famous hillsides – so there was little respite from the heat and the lack of rain.

And what to buy?

Fortunately, we can see that the climate was much less of a problem in the Hautes Côtes – here lies both value and quality in 2018 – even more-so for the reds than the whites.

There were great results in both Chablis and Pouilly-Fuissé – wines apart from the perspective of both distance and style – yet there were many great wines in both locations. You know how I love my Chablis, but I think that the Pouilly-Fuissé came out on top.
