A forward and fruity nose that majors on pear whilst retaining some elegance. Ripe (~13.7°), the acidity is fine as it rolls you into a very nice fruity finish. The mid-palate is a little subdued by comparison, but this is a fine villages Puligny and I will probably buy a few bottles.
Puligny-Montrachet
2001 Boillot Jean Puligny-Montrachet
Medium golden colour. Lots of oak on the nose, toasted bread, very savoury. The palate hints at an ever-improving waxy, soft texture, good acidity and a very good, savoury length. The intensity is above average for the appellation, giving a nice round feeling in the mouth. Today it’s a little too oak driven for my own taste, but this half-bottle was still sunk quite quickly after a hot game of ping-pong! I’d leave it another 2-3 years before revisiting, as all the material is present for a very above average village wine.
2002 Boillot Jean Puligny-Montrachet
Medium lemon-yellow. A forward and interesting nose of white blossom and a really inviting, slightly woody depth. Crisp and clean with wonderful acidity and real steely concentration – this is really my type of wine. The finish is medium-plus in length, still with a nod more towards the barrel-maker’s art than Puligny, but this is without doubt a repeat-purchase wine. Excellent villages.
2000 Boillot Jean-Marc Puligny-Montrachet
Pale gold. The nose takes a while to do what’s expected of it as it’s rather diffuse to start with. Time brings out a little fat and finally sweet and slightly buttery fruit that more than hints at Puligny. This is nicely balanced with good fruit, good-enough acidity and reasonable length, but vs Jean-Marc’s 1997, 1998 & 1999 it’s currently a little harder to find that extra Puligny dimension. Tasty and still a nice wine.
1999 Jadot Louis Puligny-Montrachet
No replacement 98’s so here’s the 99. Also quite golden in colour. The nose is deep, still showing a trace of wood, slightly creamy with a dense honeysuckle note. Gradually becomes more butterscotch. Smooth, slightly waxy and honied palate with good acidity and medium length. For me, despite no real faults the overall impression is a little heavy. Still it has good intensity and is already very tasty.

1998 Boillot Jean-Marc Puligny-Montrachet
Pale gold. The sweet nose starts with a toasty blast that fades to provide a trace of pineapple and butterscotch. The palate is equally sweet with a pleasing balance, nice acidity and a good length. The fruit is nicely concentrated but doesn’t really shout ‘Puligny’ to me. Puligny or not, this bottle was enjoyed, hence, finished much faster than expected. Perfect now and very tasty.
