Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St.Jacques

A tight and clean nose – hinting at but never showing great depth. Ripe and soft with very fine tannin. The extra dimension over the villages cuvée seems quite small.

Medium-plus colour. The nose is similar to the village gevrey – if anything tighter, more understated and consistent. Very intense; this is hard to keep in your mouth. Super acidity dovetails with plenty of tannin. Despite the concentration the personality is rather cool, clean, mineral and understated.

The nose starts diffuse and slightly mineral and earthy – almost melancholy. The palate is the direct opposite, sweet, tight, wide and long. There’s just a little grain to the tannin and again good acidity. A slow diminuendo to the length. Very nice.

Nice and complex with some depth on the nose. Again a very fine texture that dovetails well with the concentration. The tannins are a little chewy in the finish, but there is good length. Another good wine.

Medium cherry-red. The nose is much more primary than the Cazetiers, high-toned with powdery-red fruit that hints at an extra depth. In the mouth it’s a fresh complexion with good acidity and nice length – very understated. More obviously young and in need of time than the Cazetiers and, as such, it is today less charming but still a very good and well-made bottle.

I enjoyed this lots when released (November 2000), but frankly it’s a little disappointing now. Medium ruby red already showing some development and fading to the rim. A strawberry pie nose with deeper red cherry behind. Some fat with slightly prickly acidity and dusty, slightly drying tannins. Perhaps this is a dumb phase, there’s a little tertiary development, but it’s showing in a lacklustre way and is prematurely aged vs the ’98 Jadot village Beaune that has shared the same shelf for the last 3+ years.

From 40+ year old vines. Medium-plus ruby. The nose is everything that the Cazetiers isn’t, it has depth and a faintly caramel tinged red fruit – perhaps a little alcoholic. Really good intensity, good acidity and drying tannin. This is more serious, but also shows much younger as the intesitity is such that it is definitely not a 2000 for drinking now – worth saving.
