2005 Fichet Jean-Philippe Bourgogne Rouge

Medium, medium-plus colour – actually a very bright red. Wide and round, quite fresh aromas with sweet fruit and bouquet-garni too. Today the acidity is bright, providing a slight metallic edge to the flavour, but it also pushes the mouth-watering flavours much longer. The texture is smooth and though the concentration is not amazing in the context of 2005 it is way above average in the context of regionals from other vintages. I’m not overly concerned by the bright acidity as many wines from 05 are starting to show in that way, a super bourgogne.

2006 Mortet Thierry Bourgogne Rouge

Medium colour. A lovely unforced and rather precocious pinot nose. Also the fruit on the palate is surprisingly vibrant and pure. This is very enjoyable.

2006 Bourée Pierre Fils Bourgogne Rouge

The only 2006 red that’s currently bottled. All the gapes come from the Côte de Nuits, mainly a mix of Gevrey and Brochon. The colour is medium-pale. A strikingly perfumed, wide nose – even at this level the stems are included. The taste is far from concentrated, but it is very interesting and wide. This is unlike any other bourgogne I can think of – really very pretty.

2005 Barthod Ghislaine Bourgogne Rouge

Medium, medium-plus cherry-red. Slightly volatile and high-toned, but these notes mainly disappear with swirling to leave a deeper, cream-edged base – it’s then quite impressive. Fresh in the mouth, dense and slightly furry with very good fruit that follows through into the finish. Very impressive – average 2004 villages quality here – but I’d still mainly drink over the next 2-3 years.

2005 Mortet Thierry Bourgogne Rouge

Medium-pale colour. A sweet and coffee-inflected nose. Ripe and sweet, medium concentration – only the tannin is a little forward, but leave it in the cellar for a year and this should be fine.

2004 Le Moine Lucien Bourgogne Rouge

Medium, medium-plus cherry-red colour. Obviously a 2004 with soft cedar top-notes that mingle with raspberry and eventually redcurrant. When opened there is too much carbon dioxide; you can see the density and good texture but little else. I stoppered it and returned next day. The CO2 is gone and the fine texture and good depth remain. I’m sure there’s more villages wine than than ‘regional’ in this blend – it’s almost good and apart from the texture I see little overt oak. So what’s the rub? – Well, €18 per bottle (in Beaune) – it’s good, but not that good.

2005 Roulot Guy Bourgogne Rouge

Another 05 bourgogne that’s deeply coloured and quite purple. Close your eyes and the first sniffs could convince you that it’s white wine in your glass – lightly toasted bread and well mannered oak of some depth – you have to concentrate to spot the background black cherry. The palate is fresh, showing plenty of mouth-watering acidity, some astringent tannin and good length with a faint edge of bitterness. Lots of personality again and again recommended, but at €16.50 it certainly doesn’t show the value of the Lignier-Michelot – or if your prepared to wait, the Arlaud.

2001 Bachelet Denis Bourgogne Rouge

Medium cherry-red. The nose is wide, faintly funky and softly sweet and red. The palate is relatively soft with a red fruit complexion but initially simple with slightly shrill acidity. Aeration bit-by-bit subdues the acidity and you are left with a soft and friendly wine that shows little tannin and a reasonable length. Given a similar performance on day two (the bottle spent the night in the fridge) it seems more of a temperature effect – quite tart cold, smoother at room temperature. Easy drinking.
