Bourgogne Blanc

2007 Potel Nicolas Bourgogne Blanc

By on June 30, 2009 #asides

Bottled in July 2008 after a mix of oak vat and stainless-steel elevage, no battonage to keep freshness. Medium yellow. A hint of SO2 then fresh ripe fruit – mango. Sweet, fairly simple flavours with nice balancing acidity. Easy and pretty.

A medium, in fact quite young looking yellow. A little creamy, mature lanolin underpins the aromas of a younger wine. In the mouth it is linear and quite mineral until a small burst of interest in the mid-palate and a nice finish. Whilst the acidity is the defining feature of the wine, it has just enough padding that it doesn’t become jarring. Everyone around the room was sure it was a Puligny…

2006 Morey Marc Bourgogne Blanc

Mainly high tones from this pretty and fine nose. Seems well concentrated – there’s plenty of wine here – but it has a slightly ‘raw’ aspect to it. Decent length, but I think it’s some way behind Pierre Morey’s Bourgogne which is also slightly cheaper.

2005 Bourée Pierre Fils Bourgogne Blanc

Medium yellow. Deep aromas, quite forward and with good depth. Whilst it’s a little plump, the balance is very good. It’s far from steely but it’s nicely clean.

A trace of sulfur dioxide on the nose, but in the mouth this is quite full-bodied and shows a well-judged balancing acidity. I like this very much

2005 Roulot Guy Bourgogne Blanc

Plenty of toasty bread and brioche on the nose. The palate is very much about a savoury intensity wrapped with excellent acidity. There’s little here for instant gratification, rather a linear, mineral wine constructed for the longer term. I have no issue with the style and the quality is undeniable, but find it out of place in a bourgogne – even an expensive one such as this. Bourgogne’s should be fun, this will require a few years of slumber to provide that.

2003 Ambroise Bertrand Bourgogne Blanc

By on October 31, 2006 #asides

Medium yellow. The nose is quite reticent; sweet and creamy with well-absorbed wood and an almost sherbet top note. The palate is reminiscent of a 2004 with tight acidity that’s hardly covered by the extract. The finish is a little rough, but given that I don’t have an idea of the price I would say (overall) not bad, maybe even almost good if it’s cheap enough!

1997 Leroy (Maison) Bourgogne Blanc

By on September 30, 2006 #asides

Pale golden. The nose shows hints of grapefruit and a faint oxidative note – though certainly not oxidised – together with high-toned alcoholic notes. Some sweetness in the mouth, racy and lithe, quite linear. Good persistence and surprisingly little obvious ‘97 character. Despite showing very little overt fruit character this is a young wine. Interesting and no rush to drink.
