2005 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune du Château

For such a massive production – over 100,000 bottles from 21 hectares of 17 different 1er crus – this wine delivers impressively high quality in almost every vintage, 2005 is no exception. This has a lovely full nose with a creamy depth to the fruit and eventually that faintly vanilla/caramel barrel note that most of these reds are wearing. Concentrated, but vs the previous wines this is more supple and has much finer tannin. Really exemplary balance coupled with good length. I think this is a wine to buy by the case in this vintage.

From just under 10 hectares of vines from 4 1er crus. I mentioned to Christophe Bouchard that whilst I often find the red version of this cuvée, I hardly ever encounter the white – he just laughed and said ‘that’s because the Swiss prefer their reds!’. This has a nice wide nose – understated but quite focused and interesting. Richness is quite well balanced by the mouthwatering acidity. Good length too. Almost good, but I don’t see the stunning quality of the red.

2002 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune du Château

Medium-plus colour. The nose is sweet with vanilla accented red and black fruit. The palate is equally sweet and ripe, quite plush though at the moment I find a slightly annoying vanilla flavour through the core of the wine. Just-right acidity and quite long. Provided the ‘ice-cream effect’ fades this will be super.

2003 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune du Château

The nose starts with an off-putting cheesy/metallic note, swirling gets rid of this to reveal a mix of red and black shaded fruit that becomes more complex and pure by the minute – Bouchard own vines in 21 of the 44 Beaune Crus, most are represented in this wine. Fat but fleet of foot the fruit flavours are shaded towards black and backed up by velvetty tannin and nicely balancing acidity. This is usually a reliable wine but is really quite something in 2003.

2001 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune du Château

Always a relative bargain this wine – assuming that it’s a good one of course: Medium cherry-red colour. The nose is faintly powdery and a little closed when cold from the cellar. The palate shows a linear delivery of tight fruit with good intensity but little fat. Very good acidity and a slight creamy impression to the medium finish. The tannin is still a little astringent but becomes softer and friendlier with aeration. I won’t return for at least 3 years, serious wine for the price.

2000 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune du Château

Medium cherry red. The nose is a quite pleasing red fruit number without ever being very interesting. The fruit on the palate is very nice, with reasonable depth too. What’s surprising is that (for a 2000) the structure slightly outweighs the fruit. In this case this in not obvious with food and the wine works very well.

1999 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune du Château

No-one has vines in more Beaune 1er Cru sites than BP&F, this Beaune du Château is a blend of up to 15 of these 1er Crus. The aim of the blend is to a certain extent, to iron vintage differences and come up with a consistent style – more of a Bordelaise philosophy. The wine itself is medium colour. Much more fruit on rounded nose, mainly high toned. The palate is not so ‘sweet’ as the Monthelie but the fruit is nicely defined. The tannins are of the large and very furry variety. A very serious wine then, which should be outstanding value vs most 1er Crus. This wine begs to be cellared, I would say a minimum 3 years. It should be very nice.
