2000

2000 Boillot Jean-Marc Pommard Jarollières

By on November 30, 2006 #asides

Medium, medium-plus ruby-red colour. The fruit on the nose is just as sweet as the previous Rossignol, but it’s darker coloured at the edge with a red core, faint coffee too – very fetching! Less ripe palate than the Rossignol – almost mouth-puckering by comparison with a higher level of tannin. This is, however, very complex in the mid-palate and longer too.

2000 Leroy Pommard Trois Follots

By on November 30, 2006 #asides

Medium, medium-plus ruby-red. That characteristic Leroy nose (how do they do that?) of well integrated oak set against wild red fruit, almost confiture and rose petals. The fruit is red-coloured and like the other 2000’s quite tannin-forward. It’s as long as the JM Boillot Jarollières 1er cru, riper but less complex. You are left with a smooth coating on your teeth as a reminder.
It’s not really possible to criticise such an accomplished villages wine – really excellent.

2000 Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet

By on November 30, 2006 #asides

Not so much full-on oak on the nose as many grand crus from Leflaive, but plenty of toasty bread, tight fruit and eventually higher alcoholic notes. In the mouth my first impression is disappointment; soft, rather unfocused but good acidity. The wine then wakes a little with an impressive burst of complexity on the mid-palate that holds into a long – if rather oak driven – finish. It’s long and has some undoubted complexity but maybe I’ve caught it on a bad day as there’s no real focus or spark.

2000 Morey Bernard Chassagne-Montrachet Les Embrazées

By on September 30, 2006 #asides

Pale gold. The nose starts with plenty of brioche, slowly tightening and hardening and showing a little honey. The palate has some minerality and nice acidity, the finish is also not bad, but I’m missing both depth and concentration. It’s quite a linear presentation and this bottle would not convince me to repurchase.

2000 Tollot-Beaut Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières

By on September 30, 2006 #asides

Medium, medium-plus ruby-red. A nose of wide and sweet red fruit with just a suggestion of high-toned fresh mint. The impact is very up-front and indeed front-end loaded, slowly fading through the mid-palate and finish but the finish holds well. There is good ripeness and a nicely accessible presentation. A diminuendo of a wine, no hard edges, though not much structure either, yet very nice aromatics indeed. Still no rush to consume.

2000 Rion Daniel Vosne-Romanée

By on June 30, 2006 #asides

Medium colour, still trying to hold onto that last trace of cherry red. The nose shows a little rosemary, red-berry fruit and the last traces of of spicy oak. From cellar-temp this has some furry tannin and an overall nice texture. Elegant fruit of almost good concentration (way over bourgogne level) and super length – though the length has a little oaky bitterness about it. As the wine warms the nose becomes clearer and wider (very nice) the palate also becomes wider, less bitter in the finish but becomes less obviously fresh – just about the only area it shows up the vintage. Much better than I expected!

2000 Thomas Charles Pernand-Vergelesses

By on June 30, 2006 #asides

Medium ruby colour. The nose is high toned but the lower registers are decidedly musty which is a shame as there seems to be a clean core of fruit behind. The acidity stands proud of the rest of the wine – the finish is bitter too – no thanks.

2000 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune Clos du Roi

By on June 30, 2006 #asides

Medium ruby-red coloured. Medium-sweet notes, hints of strawberry and raspberry and eventually faint smoked bacon. The palate has opened out since its last outing, reasonable intensity and a good length. The acidity is a bit up an down, but this is one 2000 Côte de Beaune that is regaining a little poise.

2000 Boillot Jean-Marc Pommard Jarollières

By on March 31, 2006 #asides

Medium ruby-red. Ripe, slightly blurred red fruit, a little diffuse but okay. Another 2000 where the acid is a bit of a roller-coaster, but finishes quite well. Good sweetness and concentration with just a little bitterness on the tannin. It might not sound like it, but this is a lot better than the last outing.
