1999 Arcelain Michel Pommard

Deep, apparently oak-inflected aromas – very nice. There’s a lovely width and ripeness of dark red fruit – there’s a joy here. Lovely finish with hints of licorice – a great first wine.

1999 Vaudoisey-Creusefond Pommard Les Epenots

Deep, dark oak-influenced fruit aromas. Almost silky despite the quantity of tannin. The very dark fruit flavour doesn’t excite me but it’s both concentrated and long.

1999 Rion Daniel Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts

Medium, medium plus colour. The nose starts with a waft of dark, dank, slightly reduced, earthy toast that fades to be replaced with a slowly building crescendo of dark and impressive cherry fruit. Good, perhaps slightly lifted acidity abets the mid-palate intensity and length. The fruit in the mid-palate has a nice high-toned impression and the lingering note of the finish is stony/mineral. Acid-o-philes will like this a lot, I did!

1999 l'Arlot Nuits St.Georges Clos des Fôrets St.Georges

By billn on April 29, 2010

The cork shows sign of some seepage. Medium-plus and quite young in colour. The nose is right from l’Arlot’s more gothic implementation of stems – it’s a bit harsh and imposing, not quite what I’d call perfume – there’s also a strong mineral element that veers towards, without ever quite matching, the vintage character of 2004. Aromatically it’s a mixed bag then. In the mouth it’s intense, brooding and shows very good acidity. The tannin only comes a little to the fore in the mid-palate and onwards. It’s also quite long finishing. There’s a little cohesion missing though the individual parts seem good – I don’t think I caught it on a good day…

1999 Raphet Jean Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze

By billn on April 25, 2010

Medium-plus colour. The nose is a precocious and heady mix of sweet dark red and black fruits covered by a heavy floral scent; what’s the word I’m looking for(?) – ah yes – Gorgeous! It becomes a pure beacon of blackcurrant as some other great 99s show. Silky smooth with a hint of fat – there is real executive texture here. No fireworks, this 99 is restrained and linear right the way into the mineral / fruit with a creamy undertow finish. Subtle but very, very long. Wow, where have you been all my life Jean Raphet(?) Despite how friendly it is, clearly the palate is just a little tight yet there is ample material here for the future – such a shame there were only 2 more.

1999 Jadot Louis Beaune Les Teurons

By billn on April 13, 2010

Medium, medium-plus colour – and quite young looking colour at that! The nose has minerality, tar and eventaully candied red berries. Real intensity and mouth-watering acidity define the wine today, yet there is a hint of fat before the acidity takes over, that dissuades you from chewing to inspect the tannin! Long, mineral flavours with and edge of sweetness. Drinkable but très young!

1999 Rebourgeon Michel Pommard

By billn on March 30, 2010

The first blast of aroma is oak, quickly replaced by ripe red berries. The fruit is less obviously sweet than the last wines but panoramic in its width. There is plenty of structure, but the fruit just about keeps it in the background. Very nice finish.

1999 Michelot Jean Pommard Les Noizons

By billn on March 30, 2010

Penetrating and rather red fruit aromas. The structure is still the boss here yet the slightly roast red fruit flavours coat everything. 5+ years of rest still needed here.

1999 Billard-Gonnet Pommard Chaponnières

By billn on March 30, 2010

Magnum. Wide, fresh, complex yet understated aromas. Fresh, primary fruit. The tannin is just in balance. Modest (understated) in the mid-palate and the finish. – Perhaps a little tight?pommard
