1995 Pousse d'Or Volnay Caillerets

By on February 28, 2005 #asides

Medium ruby colour with a darker core. The nose is a bright mix of sweet, minty raspberry tart that overlays more meaty aspects. Really lovely texture, the tannins are still there on the finish, just slightly forward but fine-grained and not dominating. The well concentrated fruit is that same raspberry red colour with the minty notes of the nose still showing. Good acidity that follows through the raisin-tinged and eventually creamy finish. Certainly tasty enough to warrant a couple more purchases.

1995 Leroy (Maison) Bourgogne Rouge

By on February 28, 2005 #asides

Medium ruby with a little amber at the rim. High tones over plummy and red fruit. Nice weight to the palate, actually quite silky with good acidity. The fruit is red in complexion and of medium length. I’ve really appreciated these ’95’s, perhaps it’s time to take the ’96’s out from storage!

1995 Varoilles Gevrey-Chambertin La Romanée

By on February 28, 2005 #asides

Medium ruby red, little fading and despite a little amber at the rim, still looks relatively young. A fresh raspberry and cherry tart nose with a pleasing, slightly estery, tertiary depth. The dominant style of this wine is the acidity, smooth but in the ascendant. The fruit is actually quite tasty with a piercing red fruit aspect. There’s just a trace of dryness on the finish but the tannins are well mannered. Not fully joined up this wine, but it’s clean, very drinkable and unlikely to go downhill soon.

1995 Grivot Jean Nuits St.Georges Les Roncières

Medium plus colour with an amber rim. There’s a little meaty extract overlaying tight fruit – 10 minutes later it’s obviously corked. Bottle 2: The palate is cool, understated and packs a concentrated punch in the finish. The tannins are still present, but very, very refined. The taste lingers for almost a minute as your mouth waters from the perfectly judged acidity. Like the ’96, concentrated without being ‘extracted’. I’m glad I’ve a few more of these and hope the only dud is now discovered…

1995 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne

By on October 31, 2004 #asides

Medium golden colour. The nose is a little closed with what I first thought to be faint oxidative notes but with air becomes honied. The palate is fat and concentrated showing real complexity and super acidity. The finish is reminiscent of fresh, wild strawberries. This wine will last a very long time – and will be super.

1995 Jadot Louis - Duc de Magenta Chassagne-Montrachet Clos de la Chapelle

By on October 31, 2004 #asides

Young pale gold colour. Lots of oak on the nose but it fades slowly to reveal forward and high-toned fruit. Nice mouthfeel and excellent finishing intensity. The wood is obvious, but doesn’t spoil the overall effect. Not obviously mature, a very good wine.

1995 Colin-Deléger Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chaumes

A waxy, honied nose – quite interesting. The mouthfeel is really silky – nice wine. Good acidity and finish, delivered in a a very clean and tasty way but very understated too. Very good.

1995 Drouhin Joseph Griotte-Chambertin

By on February 29, 2004 #asides

Medium-plus ruby colour – the most opaque wine of the whole series. Whilst not as forward as the 1998 the nose has a slightly blacker impression to the fruit. Really concentrated, fat palate. Perfect acidity and fine tannins, though these are perhaps not as fine as in the 1996. This is a very impressive wine which I (just) prefer to the 1996.

1995 Thomas-Moillard Nuits St.Georges Clos du Thorey

By on February 29, 2004 #asides

A medium-plus ruby core fading only very slightly. The nose shows high tones and red raspberry/strawberry confiture, not bad at all. Good acidity and prominent grainy tannins. Big fruit and a touch of astringency on the finish. To be honest this is a bit unruly, perhaps it will get better with time. Young but needs to show a bit more class.
