1985 Drouhin Joseph Gevrey-Chambertin

Medium-plus colour, tending more to mahogany than red. The nose has limited width, but quite some brown-sugared and warm-fruited depth. There is less silk to the texture but a more open and sweet flavour, like-able as it is, I still have the occasional faint impression of something oxidative (the cork slid out very easily) and a last vestige of tannic astringency. Slowly fading on a similar bitter-chocolate note to the previous wine, though perhaps not with the length of the Pontbriand.

1985 Pontbriand Lionel de Gevrey-Chambertin

Medium-plus ruby-red that fades and transforms to mahogany at the rim. Deep, slightly musky and meaty aromas over a sweeter, almost sugared core of fruit – if anything it puts on ever-more weight with time. This has a lovely silky fatness to the texture and hints at sweetness before snatching it away again – fully ripe at harvest? – yet there is a mineral, almost metallic flavour at the core that seems almost cleansing, the acidity is quite understated. Half an hour in glass and the metallic impression is gone and there’s more than a hint of some extra mid-palate flavour. The finish may be a little understated but its reminiscent of sweet and dark, bitter-chocolate and it’s very long.

1985 Guillemard-Dupont et Fils Pommard

Medium colour with a touch of orange about it. The nose has width, if not depth, and showcases sweetly baked red fruit tarts. In the mouth this is very smooth though if you really search you might come up with a suggestion of tannin near the finish. The fruit in the mouth is also sweet and it’s quite enough to offset a slightly tart impression given by the acidity. This is mature and very drinkable – not significantly complex, but that’s the why its a village label.

1985 Tortochot Gevrey-Chambertin Clos des Corvées

A beautiful, bright, medium-intensity colour. My that’s smooth! Getting ahead of myself, sorry. The nose on first pour is a little meaty, but only a few seconds are needed for that to clear and show a pretty and sweet strawberry over a slight undergrowth depth that eventually develops a jam tart (baked) fruit – it seems very clean. There is sweet depth, the (aforementioned) silky texture and there’s depth and intensity to the mid-palate that still shows more than a hint of a fine tannic spine. In a way I’m sad, but only because this wine deserves a wider audience than it’s getting tonight.

1985 Jadot Louis Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St.Jacques

The first vintage from 0.22 hectares of vines acquired from Domaine Clair Daü. Medium colour. The nose is a perfect sphere of sweet, chocolaty, new leather and warm red fruit aromas – it’s really beautiful. Still a background of grainy tannin and a dark mineral note that runs all the way through into the finish – maybe a hint of licorice too. The finish falls away a little too quickly – but I could fix that – I just took another sip! Really beautiful.

1985 Lambrays Clos des Lambrays

The nose is wide, mature, meaty and sweet – perhaps a hint of 3-day-old socks, but a nice package. On the tongue it’s ripe and sweet with very faint oxidation in the background. The fruit is rather good and there’s still an edge of tannin. Subtly long – an interesting wine to spend time with.

1985 Clos de Tart Clos de Tart

The colour is a little younger than the Lambrays. Sweet, old wood aromas and a slight vegetal edge over deep fruit notes. The old wood is quite evident as a flavour too. There’s plenty of concentration and nicer flavours and width in the finish. Better condition than the Lambrays bottle and, hence, a better experience.

1985 Maume Mazis-Chambertin

Medium, medium-plus colour with amber at the rim. A slightly smoky element to add to the earth but a dense core of beautiful fruit is ascendant – a treat. The palate is slightly ‘confiture’, plenty of apparent concentration widening on the palate before narrowing into the finish which has a lingering fruit note borne on the acidity. Fresh and very lovely.

1985 Rousseau Armand Chambertin

Medium colour. Feral, yet understated nose at the start. Wide and interesting – it’s not about fruit, though eventually a soft red note comes through, licorice aspects too. On the palate there is a significant additional dimension vs all the previous wines. Interestingly the wildly complex palate is quite narrow until you reach the finish – then it expands exponentially. The texture and complexity on the palate reminds me of a number of 2005’s from Chambertin & Bèze – I suppose there are now 20 years to wait! A tour-de-force of a wine.
