Medium-plus ruby-red. The nose is deep with wider mineral notes, an edge of spice and just a little uncouth ‘lifted’ alcoholic top-notes. A little fat that overlays plenty of tannin – it’s quite fine though. Good depth and a good length. This is reminiscent more of 1997’s with a slight lack of freshness – though funnily most of Rion’s 97 are almost good. It’s okay but I wouldn’t buy more.
Medium-plus cherry-red colour. Initially a nose of deep, soft and sweet medium-toast oak and a little peppery dark fruit, time bestows more caramel and red fruit. Mouthfilling and concentrated yet remaining athletic rather than fat, the tannins are buried beneath the fruit. The mid-palate is expanded in the mouth by lush acidity. Finally it’s a very low-key, but long finish. Here is a 2005 that is not yet guarding its wares. An out-and-out bargain at the en-primeur purchase price of 43 Swiss francs per, that’s 26 Euros. Who says there is no value in Burgundy?
Medium-plus ruby-red. The nose starts with deep, musky oak, only very slowly does a lovely red berry note start to come through – actually it becomes very nice indeed. The palate is lithe though concentrated and shows balanced acidity. The tannin is there but you must search hard to find it. The finish is long, but like the nose, rather oak driven and, hence, just a little bitter. A good wine that is not at all easy to spot as a ‘97 and needs at least another 3 years to start coming into maturity.
Medium colour, still trying to hold onto that last trace of cherry red. The nose shows a little rosemary, red-berry fruit and the last traces of of spicy oak. From cellar-temp this has some furry tannin and an overall nice texture. Elegant fruit of almost good concentration (way over bourgogne level) and super length – though the length has a little oaky bitterness about it. As the wine warms the nose becomes clearer and wider (very nice) the palate also becomes wider, less bitter in the finish but becomes less obviously fresh – just about the only area it shows up the vintage. Much better than I expected!

Deep ruby-red, not 100% bright. The nose betrays what must have been a fair whack of oak in this wine’s youth, but it’s coming together now – just a little creamy with smokey, dusky black fruit. Fresh, mouthwatering acidity, fine density to the mid-palate and a lingering finish. Perhaps it’s just a little tart to be described as very well balanced, however, very enjoyable though it’s my last…
I’m ashamed to say, that this is a wine I bought solely based on a Winespectator review – 93 points or something, however, it’s not all that bad! The colour is medium ruby red fading slightly to amber. The nose is a blast of creamy, toasty oak that fades slightly though never quite enough to show the fruit. Ripe fruit, some fat, creamy length and little in the way of tannin. The finish is reasonably long. This is a nice wine that needs a little longer to let the oak fade a little more, but is an excellent drink now if you like the style – me I’ll let the oak fade a little more.
