Ravaut Gaston et Pierre

2006 Ravaut Gaston et Pierre Aloxe-Corton Vieilles Vignes

Medium cherry-red colour. The nose is quite forward and red fruited, but it’s a mix of higher-toned red fruit over a core of more baked red fruit and a faint mineral background. Nice fruit, good acidity and a not too grainy but slightly astringent tannic edge to your mouthful. I suspect this may be a little nicer in 12 months or-so, but it was enjoyed without remorse today – decent value at about 25 Swiss francs a bottle.

A deep cherry-red core. The nose is understated but deep – it remains so even after the last hints of dark oak have receded. This 2005 is one of the rarer wines from the vintage with an edge of black fruit in the mix – the last drops in the glass are, however, pure red. Smooth and soft – almost sweetly cordial like – it will keep this aspect for about another 2 years before becoming more ‘classically’ fresh. But balanced freshness is already evident, and the tannin is very much hidden in the background. There’s plenty of material here, and most impressive is the value – this was about 19 Swiss francs, i.e regional bourgogne territory. Even in 2005 you will be hard pressed to find such a sophisticated bourgogne.

Deep cherry red colour. A deep and dark nose; it’s a mix of red and and black fruits and a very subtle undertone of oak. Mouth-filling, soft-textured – density without inappropriateness and ripe primary fruit. The acidity brings a ‘just right’ balance. Tannins are not too unruly though you will have to search hard for them and there’s an additional faint black olive element that seems wood derived. Tasted blind you might guess a 2004 grand cru from the concentration but alas never the finish – merely a solid medium length. Tremendous value at €12 and highly recommended.

Medium-plus cherry-red. The nose is deep and initially quite tight, powdery, high-toned red fruit soon starts to take-over. The very well balanced has lovely acidity – perfectly counterbalancing the ripe, sweet fruit – at least below 20°C, above that the acidity seems a little tart. Not the density of their 01 1er Cru (Bois Roussot) but somehow a little purer. A super value bottle.

Medium-plus ruby colour. The nose is deep; concentrated baked redcurrant against a herby background – quite attractive. Good concentration, mouthwatering acidity and well-hidden tannins. The finish is quite long too. This wine punches above it’s weight – very good value too.

Medium ruby-red. The nose starts deep, but is nicely round with complimentary high tones – quite pretty and fresh. The palate also has more than a hint of freshness, narrowly avoiding being ‘too fresh’! Tasty red fruit of reasonable length and benign tannins make this an interesting wine that just might be better in its youth than 5 or 8 years down the line. Enjoyed.

Medium cherry red to the rim. The nose is mainly red berry fruit as opposed to cherry. The palate is a medium bodied elegant red fruit expression, redcurrant and raspberry in the main – particularly intense in the mid-palate. The acidity is in the background, as are the finely grained tannins. Just a little creaminess to the finish too. Elegant and perfectly formed at a bargain price.
