1999 Mugnier J-F Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses

By on July 31, 2007 #asides

Medium ruby red, still with a cherry-red rim. The nose starts a little diffuse but quickly tightens; it’s still a rather understated and bashful but has soft red fruit with the faintest cream rim – as you would expect (hope) from any of these wines, you can sniff this all day long as the intensity slowly builds into a perfect redcurrant as the glass empties. The sweet palate reflects the nose – it’s no powerhouse – intensity without apparent weight and almost perfect silky texture. There’s plenty of acidity but the balance is first-class. Absolutely everything about this wine is understated – apart from it’s class! There are no fireworks, but I’m still sad that I bought 6 and not 12! Young obviously, but a rewarding drink right now.

The colour is medium-plus red, but halfway between ruby and cherry – already starting to lose some that youthfull robe. The nose starts deep and complex with a strong cedar note at the top, and all-spice below. It takes quite some time to open out into a more fruit dimension – mainly a redcurrant note that develops a baked tart effect. The palate has perfect texture – ultra-smooth – and excellent acidity. Really exceptional length, though currently edged with some faintly bitter oak tannin. Interestingly the cedar of the nose is mirrored on the palate. Just a little more intense than the Echezeaux, but I find that cedar note intrusive. Lots of positive aspects, but a wine that is less ‘together’ than the Mugneret-Gibourg today. Take an overnight rest in the refridgerator and the last glass has a more floral nose and the palate is more ‘together’ – still a little cedar though. 5 more lay in the cellar for the long-term.

Bottled only 10 days earlier. The nose is wide and sweet, with violets and red fruits, time in the glass only adds to the penetrating weight of the aromatics – really lovely. The palate shows sweetness and freshness – super acidity – nicely intense in the mid-palate. It’s long with just a hint of bitterness at the end. This bitterness and a slightly up-and-down presentation is most likely from the recent bottling. I’ll keep an eye-out for this.

Short note two days after drinking. This was drunk together with the 99 Chambolle from Barthod. Just a little deeper in colour. The nose is more diffuse but seems to have more going on. The palate is not so focused, but matches the concentration of the Barthod then takes on another dimension – a really fantastic, many faceted finish – a real surprise, overall (just) bettering the 99, but perhaps less long-lived.

Splash decanted 15 minutes before drinking. Medium cherry/ruby red – the colour’s a little intermediate, but not much fading. The nose starts a little ‘solid’ plenty of ashy oak taking at least an hour to release the creamy red fruit – it’s good but not great. The palate is medium intensity with a spectacular finish, creamy and long, long, long. Most likely serves me right for opening at this age but I would have liked something to be happening in the mid-palate… Lovely balance – elegance over power, nice unobtrusive tannin and a real peacock’s tail of a finish, but this left me looking for just that bit extra. Excellent but as said, not yet great…

Unfortunately, after a very good run – over 2 months – corked! Smelly cork on extraction, but the wine smelled okay on pouring – 5 minutes later – ugh. I think behind the taint there’s a nice wine – sad.

From a half bottle, I have a soft spot for this wine in halves, very handy. Medium red and still quite young looking. The nose has quite some depth, just a little powdery perhaps but digs up spade-fulls of red fruit. The palate is equally giving, depth, interesting creamy length and not too much tannin. I’d still leave this another year or two, but from a half it’s drinking pretty well. On the finish, not the extra dimension of the 1999, but this comes close and is a rewarding drink – I stocked up on a few more – you can’t beat having a few halves available.

Resorted to this one when the Clerget Chambolle showed badly. Medium young cherry-red colour. The nose is high toned and a little diffuse, taking time to put on extra weight with coffee overtones. Elegant red fruit but a little more subdued than the last outing, still has the extra creamy dimension on the finish but really takes its time to sing. Today the next wine is the more rewarding.

Medium-plus, cherry red with no fading. The nose bursts with red berries, raspberry and cherry set against a creamy background – lovely purity. The palate is intense and succulent, again showing mainly red fruit. The fine tannins show a dry edge. There is an oaky depth at first which makes the palate a little ‘muddy’, but this rights itself on aeration. Young but still fine.
