1999 Grivot Jean Vosne-Romanée Bossières

Medium plus ruby colour. Starting with plenty of woodspice, you need plenty of aeration to get more fruit, still a little spice and plummy almost porty fruit. There are tannins, but well controlled and quite velvetty. The acidity nicely prolongs the finish of the black shaded fruit. This wine is currently about concentrated, one-dimensional fruit. Again I have a couple of bottles for the future which will hopefully show a little more interest and complexity once I get round to them.

1998 Grivot Jean Nuits St.Georges Lavières

Drunk after the Potel villages NSG. Darker ruby colour. The nose shows a blacker complexion to the fruit and a fleeting trace of oak. The palate shows an equally black face, good acidity and dry, furry tannin. Opens up nicely with aeration and the tannin seems to show more and more subtlety. I’d say this has a little more potential than the average villages – perhaps like the ’96 that I’ve got in the cellar.

The colour is pretty deep, still a little cherry colour at the rim. The nose is starting to show some development – lots of interest here – deep black cherry, just a little cooked and spicy plum fruit, eventually you can find a little raspberry fruit too. The palate has plenty of tannin, but very much in the Grivot style i.e. quite extracted but not too grainy. Good fruit with reasonable espresso-style length and just right acidity. Much more interesting than the 1997 non – Bossières villages.

1997 Grivot Jean Clos de Vougeot

Medium-plus ruby with a brick rim. Slightly subdued nose which is sweet and primary with high toned red berry fruit, perhaps some blueberry too. Excellent red and black cherry fruit extract on the faintly oaky palate. The dry tannins are still evident – though not rough. This is currently a little austere, but a wine with a very sneaky, creamy length. Despite the lovely fruit, this wine is certainly less dense than the previous two, very fine though – I’d say this is nowhere near ready and would suggest waiting another 3-4 years before trying again.

1997 Grivot Jean Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées

Medium/medium-plus ruby colour but quite a lot of development – looks older than many others here. The nose is of caramel, unusually a trace of spicy cedar and high toned raspberry and black cherry. The palate shows creamy raspberry and redcurrant against nice acidity and very astringent medium tannins – they’re quite smooth though. This is, perhaps, the most obviously young wine of all these tested and definitely should be left for at least 3 or 4 more years. Not a charmer today, but there’s plenty of potential.

2001 Grivot Jean Clos de Vougeot

Medium-plus colour. Thick cherry compote nose. Lovely fruit, thick tannins and good acidity. This has an earthy character and is a touch astringent, but is very good indeed.

1997 Grivot Jean Vosne-Romanée

A beautiful ruby colour when it catches the sun. Roasted raspberry nose, just a trace of spice too. Neither the concentration nor tannin of Grivot’s 1995 VR Bossières, but this is very smooth with medium concentrated fruit. The palate was also very dry – but became more friendly with time. Almost good today, but I think much better in 2 or 3 years time.

1988 Grivot Jean Nuits St.Georges Les Pruliers

Old style label. Garnet in shade. The nose is deep and still oaky with eventually some dried fruit as a higher register, but I have to say not all that attractive. This is still a big wine with good concentration of black fruit, a broad palate, relatively mild acidity and still strong tannins which are a little bitter in the finish. The length is not bad. Overall not a patch on what the Corton could have been. If the tannin resolves further this will be a better wine, but don’t bother searching for it.

1989 Grivot Jean Nuits St.Georges Les Pruliers

Old style label. Quite deep ruby with brick edge. The nose still has some woody oak, but has sweetened. Slightly smokey/tobacco and ashes from the fire hints. Underneath that I’d say plum conserve. Really nice mouth-feel. Thick, silky and following an apparent mid-palate gap, suddenly very long. After 20 minutes the gap is plugged by quite high cherry fruit, but the acidity on the finish is starting to get a little harsh. Seems only a transient (or palate!) thing as it drinks well all evening. Not earth shattering, but very tasty. Definitely better today than the 1988 version.
