Comte Georges de Vogüé

2007 Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes-Mares

After the Amoureuses the nose is broader, less refined but full of energy – like the premier cru there is a hint of background spice. Mouth-filling with soft tannin and juicy fruit – actually for the first time I have an impression in my mind of ‘risotto rice’ for the tannins – soft but still with a little bite of crunchy texture at their core. François says this can be a characteristic of the ‘terres rouges’ where the domaine’s vines are planted. Long finishing, this wine is not as forceful as some vintages, but I like it all the more for that. Excellent.

The nose offers an obvious first impression of flora, yet seems underpinned almost by ‘texture’ and a background hint of anise. In the mouth this is clearly cut from thicker cloth, yet manages to find all the hiding spaces in your mouth in order to attach its lingering flavours. The tannin has some grain to it, but that grain seems ‘loaded’ with flavour. Very, very complex despite my poor attempts to warm the glass. A wine that always impresses in this situation – bravo!

Medium colour. High-toned, very red fruit-driven aromatics with a subtle creamy undertow. The aromas as the glass empties are of super-focused red berry. This is actually impressively concentrated with excellent dimensions of flavour. Whilst clearly an ‘executive’ villages, I can’t bring myself to spend 110 francs a bottle for a villages – I’d go for Clos des Ducs at the same price

Medium colour. Fine and very complex aromatics – very lovely mix of fruit(s) and faint torrefaction. Intense, plenty of velvet tannin and great dimension in the mid-palate. The flavour lingers really well. I seem to ‘click’ with this in most vintages, and frankly, this is almost worth the price of entry, even at 185 swiss francs!

The nose is a little spicy, yet at the core mineral too – less fruit-driven than the previous wines. Lots of fresh dimension and concentration in the mouth. The flavour keeps building long after you swallow – very long finishing. Excellent, just don’t mention the price.

Medium, medium-plus colour. Initially not quite the intensity of aroma as the previous wines, but certainly it’s very complex – remains fine, but it becomes ever-more precise in the glass. This wine really delivers. Your mouth is filled with so many dimensions. There’s a slight rasp to the tannin, but it’s just part of the experience. Super, and no spitting.

Higher-toned, more giving aromatics of depth and interest. Lithe and athletic – it’s like a coiled spring – I don’t know how the energy was contained in the glass. I normally shy away from Bonnes-Mares, but this one stole the show. Beg, borrow or steal to drink this – I will!

Simple but pure red fruits on the nose. Nice concentration and quite ripe – reminds a little of the Rousseau villages, but this is just a little more lithe. Good length. Clearly overpriced I’m afraid.

High-toned, complex and delicate aromatics – quite engaging. More concentration and tannin than the ‘villages’, but there’s really and extra dimension of flavour in the mid-palate. Excellent, but also overpriced.
