2007 Forey Père et Fils, Vosne-Romanée Les GaudichotsApr. 2009
A composed nose that seems very sure of its class! – dense, imperious fruit. Complexity and freshness, plenty of ripe tannin and merely good dimension in the mid-palate. High-class Vosne.
2006 Potel Nicolas, Vosne-Romanée Les GaudichotsApr. 2008
Much more depth and density here – this is a grand cru nose. Here is another tight Vosne, but versus all that have gone before, there is an extra creamy density. Only hinting at what’s in the tank, but this will be excellent.
2002 Potel Nicolas, Vosne-Romanée Les GaudichotsOct. 2006
Deeper ruby-red colour vs the 02 DRC 1er. The nose is sweeter with a hint of oak and cedar and perhaps just a trace of volatility. Beautiful texture, opens out over the palate very well. This wine in isolation a rather good, next to the DRC it’s lacking focus and precision. There is more density and intesity but not quite the length of the DRC. Today this comes a distant second, it will be interesting to make the test again in another ten years or so.
1998 Forey Père et Fils, Vosne-Romanée Les GaudichotsJul. 2005
Medium-plus red, more ruby than cherry, gently fading at the rim. The nose is quite forward but also rather dense, red fruit and an underlying cedar/mineral note. The palate starts in a very understated way almost to the point of there being something missing, but the intensity builds into quite an impressive mid-palate and very long finish. The acidity is a touch bright in the finish but there is nothing at-all astringent about the tannins. I wine that I felt lacking at the start, only to finish with me lamenting a lack of wine! Very good and I think better than the 2000 I’ve previously tasted.
2000 Forey Père et Fils, Vosne-Romanée Les GaudichotsJan. 2003
Looks more mature than the previous wine, still a core of cherry colour, but more brick at at the rim. Nose is is very interesting with spices and an undercurrent of cherry and coffee. The palate has almost good acidity and furry tannin. Good depth to the red fruit which goes on and on in the finish, but is (for me) slightly spoiled by a ‘dirtyness’ right at the end. Could be just the oak which should subside with time. Still a very fine wine I think.
