2006 Rion Patrice, Gevrey-Chambertin Clos PrieurApr. 2009
Medium colour. A caramel nose that almost completely hides the nice red cherry fruit. Nice acidity and plenty of sweet, ripe fruit. Nothing obviously ‘gevrey’ today; faint astringency to the tannin and a decent length. Very tasty indeed, but I’d like a bit more connection with the village – it just needs a little time for that as many young wines need to shake off their elevage. Anyway it’s a good value bottle.
2004 Rion Patrice, Nuits St.Georges Les ArgillièresDec. 2006
Medium, medium-plus cherry-red. The nose has a pure and bright red-fruit core but has a rather green-pea malolactic style edge – though of quite some depth. The palate has medium depth, good acidity and a creamy, deep oaky, though with a rather dry tannic depth – but needs an extra dose of ripeness I think.
2004 Rion Patrice, Chambolle-Musigny Les CharmesDec. 2006
Medium, medium-plus cherry-red. The nose is quintessential Chambolle – or at least many peoples’ expectation – soft, sweet red fruit with the faintest savoury edge; it’s very pretty. Versus the domaine’s 04 Argillières there is more depth, intensity and an extra ripeness. The tannins are fully covered. The acidity still has a little tartness, but also helps hold the fresh flavours of the mouth-watering finish. The oak has much better integration here – lovely wine.
2003 Rion Patrice, Gevrey-Chambertin Clos PrieurJul. 2006
Medium, medium-plus colour. The nose starts with lots of spicy oak, slowly fading to leave a few diffuse, high-toned notes over a fainter sweet base, eventually a faint coffe note too. The palate is medium concentrated with grainy but ripe tannins. Black, almost scorched fruit and a little mouth watering. Lots of sweetness, medium length. Like their 03 NSG premier, still not a 03 style that I enjoy.
2003 Rion Patrice, Nuits St.Georges Clos Des ArgillièresJul. 2006
Deep coloured. The explosive nose is full of deep sweet oak, certainly quite OTT at this young age. The palate is deep & sweet, mixing easily with completely covered fine tannins, lots of sweet oak on the sweet fruit is hard to take. Medium-plus, very sweet length. I have another bottle to prove me wrong in the future, but today there is nothing here that I look for in Burgundy – my wife loved it!
