Travels in Burgundy 2018

my week (so far)…

Bret's cuvée Japonais

This week is a great mix; yesterday les Aligoteurs were showing their wares in Flagey-Echézeaux – almost 50 domaines – I’m ashamed to say that I only tasted the wines of 27 domaines – but that was already nearly 4 hours and almost 80 wines worth – after which my palate said ‘STOP!’ Seemingly there […]

a little friday faiveley action…

The new tasting area in Faiveley’s renovated Nuits cuverie is just one week into its new life. The cuverie covers numbers 38A and 38B in the street, but they call the place Number 38. it still smells of paint, but it’s still worth your time – it was definitely worth mine 😉

puligny-blagny-meursault-puligny – cross-country…

Looking down on Puligny from La Garenne I might have started at 5pm, the but the temperature was never lower than 26°C for my 7km of cross-country – I’ve not yet adjusted to the temperature – so it could have been easier! Starting at Hotel Le Montrachet, through the vines and up past Chevalier-Montrachet, through […]

the sun has got his hat on…

Breakfast pictures in Beaune, and some ‘whilst jogging’ shots from this afternoon:

jogging around beaune yesterday

BP&F's magnolia just needs a few more days...

The rain actually stopped in the morning, so a jog seemed appropriate in the afternoon – 15 km around Beaune/Pommard – Strava seemed to take the regular photo-opportunity stops in its stride!

All Côte de Nuits, mainly in-between the rain-storms:

les grands jours – days 4 & 5

les grands jours – days 4 & 5

The last days of the Grands Jours. Thursday after ‘avoiding’ Mercurey, there was domaine visits in Volnay followed by an evening in Nuits St.Georges. Whilst Friday brought Vougeot, Gevrey and Marsannay. Marsannay is a Paulée to finish the week – I’m writing this before the Paulée! Interesting to see how many ‘punters’ took a chance […]

driving, driving

driving, driving

Driving rain today, also driving to Mercurey and back from Beaune – total time ~1 hour – but no Côte Chalonnaise tasting I’m sorry to say. The only available parking was miles away, and in that rain I was not going to be in the correct state to taste. I don’t think my note-taking iPad […]

grands jours – days 2 & 3

sun on the Bouzaise...

Just so you know that there is life here! Over 100 wines per day are passing my lips, and to be honest, my teeth are complaining. The extra sensodyne helps a little but also exacerbates the structure of reds – whites seem immune – so long as I realise that, and can factor it in, […]

grands jours – 1er jour

grands jours – 1er jour

Most of Beaune decamped to Chablis today – sometimes with blue sky, other times with heavy rain and hail – just like in the Côte de Beaune yesterday. Two years ago we enjoyed 26°C during this tasting- and the wines quickly became too warm. There was no worry about that today – temperatures were about […]

a little (mainly) st.romain action today…

Home to Lady Gaga?

Having, first, dispatched the first mosquito of the year, the forecast wasn’t great for the afternoon – but we still had sun in the middle of the day – So we decided to take a chance and go for a walk in St.Romain. We couldn’t have calculated it better – the first drops of rain […]

new maps & saturday afternoon in the meursault sunshine

new maps & saturday afternoon in the meursault sunshine

I love these maps – and now there are even more of them! To the right you can see the new ‘wider picture’ maps in the Beaujolais series, which now means that it’s a set of 19(!) – and they are all now in my greedy hands! This set now comes in a much more […]
