prince florent de merode 2008 ladoix chaillots

Update 9.11.2012(8.11.2012)billn

Actually, on checking, I’m astounded to see that this cost only £60 for 6 IB when purchased en-primeur (check Howard Ripley on the blue  below). Cheaper, but magnificently better wine, than probably all Bourgognes…

2008 Prince Florent de Merode, Ladoix Les Chaillots
Medium, medium-plus colour. The nose is very shy, just faint red cherry and occasional slightly lactic notes. In the mouth there’s a smooth entry and a quite impressive, acid-led, intensity yet there is concentration to balance. High-toned fruit almost tends to esters, but remains tasty. The tannin is slidy/sticky rather than grainy. Even before you see the price this is very moreish. Exceptional quality for the price.
Rebuy – Yes

I was also very happy when I got home yesterday – two mixed cases of wine waiting for my attention. I’m test-driving a new Swiss merchant who has an intruiging list of producers that I rarely see ‘in der Schweiz’. Buisson-Charles, Digioia-Royer, Rossignol-Trapet and Jean Pillot are quite well known (around here!) but a little more mystery surrounds Hervé Murat, Morey-Coffinet, Poulleau Père, Noëllat, Bart, Vaudoisey-Creusefond, Pierre Amiot, Maratray-Dubreuil and Philippe Livera. Actually, the Maratray-Dubreuil is another Ladoix – perfect for following the above! Looks fun!

My best value burgundy. Has a lovely delicate hue you don’t see so much anymore. like there’s a candle burning at the center of the glass.

The 2007 was also offered at a very low price. It looks like the domaine is winding down its business, since DRC has taken the Corton vineyards. Wonder what happened to les Platieres in Pommard?

Just coming to the last third of my first bottle of this wine – that two thirds have disappeared over c5 hours says it all maybe 😉 . No shy nose here for me from a Riedel but, ‘wow’, very pronounced, glass leaping out of nose, cherry & damson fruit, vanilla, smokiness and something else I can’t pin down. As Ed says a glorious, come hither, colour. Delicate yes, limpid, bright with just slight washed out fade to very edge of the rim. Smooth, then explosive cool fruit, acid, slightly burnt oaky, and creamily mouth watering on the front palate, building with the concentration Bill refers to a back palate crescendo before the liquid disappears leaving a ‘grab’ of drying tannin all around the mouth needing some tongue action before another mouthful ! In two words:- ‘totally delicious’ & to borrow a word – ‘yum’ ! Very 2008 plus. I adore this vintage. And then per Ed / Bill there’s the price ! Silly !! If Howard Ripley in the UK hadn’t sold this through I’d be online before this securing some more. Thanks Bill. Seems every time I try a Ladoix from any producer I likee. Have some Capbern-Gasqueton Ladoix 08’s winking at me – maybe next weekend.
