getting closer – vintage 2010…

13.9.2010billn

With less than a week to go for some. After some heavy rain yesterday and even hail in (at least) Santenay, here are a few thoughts on the harvest from one winemaker…

It is the best of times, it is the worst of times. Lots of rain over the past week, interspersed with some sun. Perfect rot conditions. The winds we’ve had have been mostly moist, so no help there. Weather’s supposed to degrade again at the end of the week and through the weekend, making things even more interesting. I’m doing sampling tomorrow, and will probably start sometime after the 20th, with the sample results and weather forecast both coming into the decision-making process. I don’t expect to finish until well into October, however.

And new for today – how clean is your wood? !

Agree? Disagree? Anything you'd like to add?

Reports from friends in the Calif. wine country say it has been a rather unusally cool year. This has reversed a trend of succeedingly hot years. Most people I talked to were expecting a slight heat spike and some questioned whether some growers had done to much leaf pruning. If the dry wheather holds until mid Oct. or later it could be an unusual and very fine year.

At last ! I’ve had an email reply today from Cyprien Arlaud to my weekend enquiry about a start date – answer “be in Morey on the 24th, for a 25th start”. Yippee !

At the moment I don’t even care if it rains all the time I’m there I’m looking forward to it so much – well, I might when I’m there 😉 .

Horrible black wet night here in NW England with heavy rain and strong winds.

Ned to get some new wellington boots at the weekend and some spare knee pads plus suitable gloves – if only for the non secateur holding hand.

A Cote de Beaune producer just advised me that I wouldn’t be able to shift my wines next week as they would be ‘in harvest’.

Yes Glenn – they’ve cleared the decks and some tentative first picks are already underway – almost everything will be done by the end of the month.
