offer of the day

Domaine d´Eugénie

Vosne Romanee 2006 75cl 89.50 SFr
Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Aux Brulées 2006 75cl 155.00

Clos de Vougeot 2006 75cl 295.00
Echezeaux 2006 75cl 295.00
Grands Echezeaux 2006 75cl 295.00

It’s confirmed that the world has indeed gone mad, I’m only surprised in 2 areas; 1) that the prices are lower than the Comte Georges de Vogüé wines, and 2) that the Grands Echezeaux is not showing a premium over the Echezeaux – maybe the quality differential is missing? I have not ordered any for ‘testing’.

As a benchmark, Bibendum the uk importer, still have 20 cases of the 2006 ‘villages’ Vosne at a price that works out to be about 56 Swiss Francs per bottle. They don’t have any Grands Echézeaux, but Brulées an Clos de Vougeot seem available…

I keep hoping that the market and credit shake up will take a bit of the gas out of these prices.

I know that the negociants and distributors have had to pay premiums to get allocations, but my guess is that a few of them may be left holding the bag.

Will the vintners themselves ease prices? Time will tell.

(btw: I’m not surprise that price(Vogue) > price(Eugénie), but I’m clearly not as well versed.

I think it’s desirable that even those who can easily afford such prices resolutely sit on their hands here. If it turns out the the Bordelais can make profit from Burgundy even at the grossly inflated price that was paid for this domaine, who knows where it will end?

This is all very sad & worrying in terms of the Bordelais come to Burgundy effect imho. Are Eugenie wines ‘that’much better than the wonderful hands on wines of Phillipe Engel ? I cant imagine so although I admit I havent tasted Eugenie – but at their prices I doubt I ever will. All smacks of M.Pinault seeking a “suitable” return on his investment right out the traps. The price of the Vougeot is mind boggling.
Maybe all M.Pinault will do is to make me treasure my Engel wines all the more & the memory of a fine winemaker.
