Claudie on 2014:
“I’m really happy because the whites have a lovely balance – we are just starting to bottle the whites, and they are alive and not too ripe. The reds have soft tannin, easy fruit, much better than expected at the start of elevage – we saw longer malos for the reds.

“The 2014s have eaten a lot of oak without problem. I have a small preference for the reds of the Côte de Nuits in this vintage.”

The wines…

2014 St.Romain
A bright and intense nose, lime fruit over a suggestion of toast. Wide, growing, mouth-watering flavour, really lovely in the mid-palate – super-lovely!

2014 Meursault
Started exploiting fully in 2014. Make all the work in these vines.
Fresh, sweet, classic Meursault nose. Lithe, modest, wide flavour, very fine detail but a growing flavour profile. Really long too, a super wine that really creeps up on you.

2014 Chassagne-Montrachet
The second vintage actually vinified here. A mix of parcels bought in must.
Deep, open nose. A good width of flavour here, like the Meursault one that grows and grows. Quite interesting but not the character of the Meursault today… the finish, however, is really super.

2014 Pernand-Vergelesses Sous Fretille
Airy, very pretty perfume. Wide, tasty fruit, lots of complexity here, really a beautiful width. A hint of oak flavour but this is lovely indeed fine wine.

2014 Meursault 1er Blagny
Deep, forward nose, a little reduction. A little gas to start, but here is fine balance and waves of lovely flavour. Excellent despite the modest reduction…
2014 Meursault 1er Les Charmes
A nice complex nose – yum. Just the faintest reduction. Big but with energy and interest. This I like very much. I think you can find more concentrated Charmes this year, but that’s mot necessarily better! Super length.
2014 Meursault 1er Genevrières
A mix of normal and larger barrel elevage.
A warmer nose of spice and an undercurrent of ripe fruit. More gas, lots of flavour complexity here – hmm… – my favourite so far… Really extra yum!
2014 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Combettes
A fresh nose augmented with a little creaminess, more direct and mineral, the flavour coming later on the palate, but very beautiful flavour. Hard to follow the Genevrières, but this just about achieves it. Excellent in the finish! Really excellent!

2014 Corton-Charlemagne
A tighter nose but with fine fresh top notes, wide lovely fresh complexity, rather mineral style. Up until the finish, this is rather discreet but the finish is really a fine thing.

2014 Bâtard-Montrachet
1 barrel in 13, 2 in 2014.
A deep, textured nose of layers. Beautiful, layered waves of flavour. Large but not gross, finely balanced, indeed contemplative. Simply a beautiful thing…

2014 Montrachet
A different nose, less forward, more acacia, larger in scale. Also less forward in the mouth, if not initial flavour, more intense waves of flavour. Perhaps from the mid-palate a better wine than the Batard, but as a complete a wine behind, today.

Les Rouges…
The Nuits are being bottled today…

2014 Beaune 1er Bressandes
Bright, fine pretty fruit and flowers. Wide, lots of flavour complexity. Some dryness of tannin, perhaps a hint of wood tannin. But this is very lively wine. Bright flavour spots in the finish.

2014 Beaune 1er Teurons
Domaine ex-Germain – 2 hectares.
A hint of smoky reduction, more structure, really great fruit flavour and depth of fruit, aided by some creamy oak. This will need time, but I think it is excellent.

2014 Beaune 1er Grèves
A deep, less fully formed nose. Fresher, very complex, not really together today but the mid-palate and finishing flavours I find excellent, indeed beautiful… Extra long with flowers – I think this could be great!

2014 Beaune 1er Marconnets
Like the Greves, this nose is not yet ready. Big, structured, lots going on, there’s energy and complexity. I think behind the Greves today, but very fine…

2014 Vosne-Romanée
2 parcels: Desous la Riviere and Jacquines – basically next to each other.
A faint reduction but good fruit with a little spice. Excellent width and dimension of clean pure flavour. This is really lovely. The finish is excellent too!
2014 Nuits St.Georges 1er Les Damodes
Deep, dark fruit but no reduction. Nicely textured, a width of complex flavour. Waves of flavour. Classic excellent 2014. The finish has a little barrel, but only here…

2014 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Aux Echanges
Wide, sweetness of fruit and a faint herb. More subtle, again waves of flavour, more mineral, here is a wine that’s rather discreet today.

2014 Vosne-Romanée 1er Les Suchots
Some matchstick reduction. Bright flavours, a little reduction here too, super in the mid-palate and finish though.

2014 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cazetiers
A mix of old and younger vines, lots of small millerande grapes.
This just gets more and more beautiful in the glass. A wine that grows in stature in your mouth. Really special in the mid-palate into the finish. Floral finishing too. Excellent

2014 Clos de Vougeot
Domaine, a new barrel, this will be racked later today.
Complex with a little creamy oak. Direct, structured, then a growing complexity of flavour comes to the fore, plenty of oak, some salinity, lots and lots of weighty finishing flavour. Clearly a wine to wait for, but lots of interest here.

2014 Charmes-Chambertin
Wide, fresh, deep dark red fruit. Super texture. Broad flavours and texture. Lovely flavours. Goes very long. This will be very fine.
