Dominique on 2017:
We had the same harvest date as in 2015. 2017 is a really good vintage – magnificent grapes for both colours. Good harvests, but we never passed much more than 40-45 hl/ha, though we still had less than 30 hl/ha in Meursault, and one Beaune was 25 hl/ha – but that was better than the zero we got in 2016! The wines are round with aromas of little fruits. We were very lucky not to have frost, just the domaine here burnt 10 tonnes of hay to add to the sun-screen.

Dominique on 2016:
2016 was difficult and we harvested late. But it wasn’t just frost, it was hard due to the mildew – we are Bio here with certification next year (2018.). It was half a harvest for us from the perspective of volume. In Beaune we had nothing and some other places were not much better. On the other hand, Corton and Charlemagne were normal volume harvests. We started 23 September. We always retain some bottles each year, so the stock may have gone down, but still we have some back vintages here for restaurants et-cetera. About 70-80% of production is exported from here, French sales are often to restaurants.

The wines…

Most of the 2016s are not yet bottled.

It seems that I have been absent from visiting this domaine for too long – these are a seriously knockout range of wines – bravo!

2016 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Les Dames de Vergy
This the only bottled wine… from near Nuits St.Georges.
A nice freshness and depth of dark red fruit, modest width. Supple, with beautiful texture for the label and equally, great weight. This is a quality Bourgogne. Excellent! Some bitters in the finish, very attractive wine!

2016 Savigny lès Beaune Goudelettes
Only 4 barrels this year – about 4hl/ha!
Deep colour and a deep nose too, aided by a little reduction – it’s still in barrel. The reduction fades and the wine becomes attractively floral. Supple again a little note of herb but this is complex, and fine textured. Good depth of flavour. Excellent, but so little…

2016 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras
The domaine owns over 3 ha in Chambolle – but this brought only about 10 hl/ha!
Ooh, delicious fresh Floral super. Bright, fresh, deep, complex, floral, and some muscle too. Perfect villages Chambolle – delicious! Long too – nothing facile.
2016 Gevrey-Chambertin La Justice
35 hl/ha – the same in 2017 too.
A wow nose – vibrant and deep. Wide, very wide, almost a hint of minerality here, floral too but really great concentration for a villages. Bravo again!

2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Carougeot
Next to Jousie, below Corbeaux
Another great nose, more mineral and crystalline. A little gas here, probably because of that a fresher impression. A hint of salinity, really a wide finish and slightly more complex. Super wine.

2016 Charmes-Chambertin
Only 1.5 barrels. Racked to stainless steel for about 3 months before bottling.
A shame, this is really a much tighter nose. Really direct, a linear wine, faintly accented with some coffee, more intensity and more weight of finishing power. Impressive linear wine but with good depth of texture too.

2016 Volnay 1er Clos des Chênes
Wow! Delicate, pure, complex – a gorgeous nose. Rather direct for CdC, but the flavour is melting from the core, concentrated flavour with balance. A bright growth of finishing flavour before slowly fading. Great Volnay
2016 Aloxe-Corton 1er Les Fournières
Vibrant and fresh but with depth – a super nose. Big in the mouth, not fat just a little extra depth of texture. Mouth-watering layers of flavour. This is really top. I’d still be happy if told it was Corton!

2016 Corton-Bressandes
‘40% new barrels here, but apart from the single barrel of Charmes-Chambertin, new oak is always on a lower level.’ These will be bottled in February, maybe a little later.
Pretty floral, faintly pyrazine. Fresh, deep and changing flavour, lots of complexity, faintly saline, more tannin in the finish but with very little astringency – fine-grained. Very good!

2016 Corton Clos du Roy
Horse-powered ploughing here, in the 60 year-old vines.
Wide, no pyrazine, very attractive pure fruit. There’s a hint of reduction at the start of the flavour then frankly great depth of beautiful mid-palate flavour. Wow!

2015 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Goudelettes
Deep, less wide, good freshness, faint spice but nice fruit too. A really super texture, nice freshness. I prefer the fruit from the 2016 but this is really super!

2015 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras
Needs a bit of aeration to remove some reduction – nice volume if modest weight of aroma. Supple, slowly melting flavour over the palate, this is a wine that needs a little time to open, but it’s becoming more and more delicious.

2015 Corton Clos du Roy
Certainly more modest weight vs the 16 but really fine and complex aromas. Ooh – I’ll say that again – ohhh! This is a knockout on the palate, silky, no edges, gorgeously flavoured, a hint saline. Simply bravo wine!

Les blancs:

2016 Bourgogne Chardonnay
Was bottled this week. Also from Hautes Côtes de Nuits near Nuits St.Georges.
A big, open and fresh, slightly saline nose. Bright, good volume, a serious Bourgogne, not easy fruit but this is gourmand, saline and great for the table, not the apero.

2016 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Sous Fretille
‘A catastrophic volume’ in 2016, also just bottled
A very nice freshness – an attractive nose. Ooh, this is super in the mouth, depth of flavour but more than enough juicy width of flavour too. Nice depth of texture – lovely wine, seriously lovely…

2016 Meursault 1er Charmes
Currently on lees.
Lithe, virile, but with enough freshness and waves of flavour and some minerality. This has really a lot of potential.

2016 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Les Pucelles
A vibrant nose of crystalline purity – big, mouth-watering wine that’s fresh, with a growing minerality and weight of flavour – almost a tannin. Long, long, long. Proper Pucelles – Excellent!

2016 Corton-charlemagne
Like the Meursault-Charmes still on lees
A little reduction like the Charmes, but fine volume of aroma. Lovely direct freshness, energy and just a slight cushion to the texture. Even a hint of finishing tannin again. I always thought that they had a great wine here, and this is along those lines…

Agree? Disagree? Anything you'd like to add?
