Jean-Marc on 2017:
I’m really happy with it. We started our harvest on the 1st September, and worked hard to finish as quickly as we could. I’m happy with the volume and the quality – luckily we had no frost here.

“Honestly, it was a dream, I already think that it’s my greatest vintage!

Jean-Marc on 2016:
For us, 2016 was a little miracle – we lost only 25% of our production to the frost, I’ve many friends who only kept 25% of their production! The wines remained sulfur free until only 14 days ago – I also plan to bottle the whites in an inert atmosphere too.

The wines…

I really visited too early in the domaine’s ‘elevage calendar’ for the reds – the fruit was lovely and the structure and form were first class – but they were also soooo tight. Have patience these will be great wines for their labels. But the whites – the whites were simply fabulous – easily one of the top dozen domaines for whites in 2016!

2016 Santenay Les Potets Blanc
Near the casino.
A little savoury saline note of sans-souffre here. Fresh, full of energy but no harshness. The finish has depth and detail that is fabulously delicious. What a wine!

2016 Montagny 1er Cru
Bought grapes, from two 1ers blended from hillside vines – poor soil with lots of iron – ‘Similar to some Chassagne soils.’
A nice freshness here, less overtly sans-souffre. Round, lovely energy again, a different complexion, a little more bite to the acidity, but really fine in the mid-palate and just a hint behind the first Santenay in the finish. A little more lime fruit here.

2016 Auxey-Duresses Le Hautes
The nose is less open. Some gas here. Wide, really a wide panorama – gushing freshness but nothing hard or harsh. Vibrant finishing, a beauty. Overall a nicer wine for me than the first Santenay!
2016 Santenay 1er Gravières
A little broader nose. Full, mouth-watering, again gushing flavour, really a super intensity in the mid-palate, super mineral but nothing hard. Just great and delicious wine

2016 Santenay 1er Le Beaurepaire
That’s a big nose, really inviting too. Good volume again, here with more density, a little apple-y sans-souffre style but also detailed crystalline and long, long, long….

2016 Puligny-Montrachet Corvées des Vignes
Such a big nose, of freshness and maybe a hint of oak too. A little more mineral but the same large volume of gushing, melting freshness of citrus – without harshness – there’s even a hint of mandarin in the finish. Gorgeous wine.

Les Rouges:
Bottling in most likely in March.

2016 Santenay Vieilles-Vignes
Just two lieu dits principally, and over 50 year-old vines
Rather a tighter nose but with a baseline of pure dark fruit. Supple, a nice grain of tannin, lingering flavour, dark flavour. Rather one-dimensional today – but it’s a very tasty dimension for all that!

2016 Santenay 1er Le Beaurepaire
Also a little tighter nose. More direct, more of line, a little edge of sucrosity, really a brooding intensity… Long and mineral finishing. These reds are not so open just now but there’s much promise…

2016 Santenay 1er Passetemps
14k/hectare pinot fin planting. Usually no more than 35 hl/ha yields.
Also quite tight, just a little extra redness to the fruit. Fuller, more volume, more mouth-watering – in form this is more like the whites, but with plenty of structure behind. Long mouth-watering flavour….

2016 Santenay 1er Les Gravières
Old vines of 70 years-old.
A deep nose again, but tight like all the reds in this series. Plenty of gas – more than the other wines. Some semblance of the whole-clusters in this wine – they are in all the other wines too. Width and freshness tempered by the tannin today…
