Jean-Marc on 2016:
2016 was a little miracle – we lost only 25%, I’ve many friends who only kept 25%.

The wines…

I remember Jean-Marc telling me last year that“2015 is special but should still be classic like 1947 or 1959, or similar.” Time to see! In this vintage they managed to produce 35 hl/ha and, not surprisingly, very happy with this!

The reds are simply first class and punch way higher than you expect from a wine with a Santenay label. The whites I found thrilling – bravo!

2015 Santenay Vieilles-Vignes
Just two lieu dits principally, and over 50 year-old vines
Deep, perfect clean, dark red fruit. Large-scaled, dark fruit, super energy. Widening and even with its mineral side this is simply delicious….

2015 Santenay 1er Le Beaurepaire
Also large scaled. But here with a little more whole-cluster complexity. Also lots of scale here, fine silk before some tannin arrives – again a super energy but with more depth and complexity of flavour. Long, long, long. Masculine, muscular wine (sorry) but super wine!

2015 Santenay 1er Passetemps
14k/hectare pinot fin planting. Usually no more than 35 hl/ha yields.
Here a deeper redder nose. More supple, rounder, melting, much more herby minerality and complexity here deeper too – lovely wine!

2015 Santenay 1er Les Gravières
Old vines of 70 years-old.
More modest yet wider nose, really fine and interesting. Quite the widest and most supple, modestly textured and complex flavour. Super long – modestly brilliant!
2015 Auxey-Duresses 1er Les Bretrains
Wide and saline, a very attractive nose. Lots of volume quite a big wine with a similar complexity to the last – just the shape is different. Really some mid-palate intensity here.
2014 Gravité
Only commercialising the 2013 at the moment, this the old-vines selection from across the domaine.
Deep, jammy fruit-forward but fresh not fat. Beautiful texture. Wide, fresh, lithe no unnecessary padding – just great wine!

Les Blancs…
Everything harvested in August, all 12.3°-12.4°. ‘I’m not looking for alcohol im looking for flavour!

2015 Bourgogne Blanc
Almost a little sweet rhubarb – this has a very attractive nose. Big, generous, silky, but utterly more-ish. This is lovely.

2015 Santenay Les Potets Blanc
Near the casino.
Hmm, this draws me in – there’s freshness up top and sweetness below, very faintly accented with oak. Super, lithe and intense, very silky and a little mineral – bravo! Excellent.

2015 Auxey-Duresses Le Hautes
Deep, faintly lactic, faintly oaked but attractive all the same. Supple, beautifully textured again, a hint more flavour richness, some salinity too, but this has its own steady balance and mouth-watering flavour. And wow that holds well!

2015 Montagny 1er Cru
Bought grapes, from two 1ers blended from hillside vines – poor soil with lots of iron – ‘Similar to some Chassagne soils.’
Wide and a little floral this nose. Lovely, mineral, mouth-watering wine. Nice, not rich in flavour or structure, just waves of flavour. Super long…

2015 Saint Aubin 1er Cru
Sur Gamay and Les Combes assembled.
Deep with ripe lemon below and a just a faint whiff of fresher notes bove. Supple, very silky, suave texture, slowly overtaken by beautiful citrus acidity – I’m not sure they make enough of this for me!
2015 Santenay 1er Le Beaurepaire
Much wider, with the addition of a hint of flowers, gorgeous freshness and energy, this is absolutely gorgeous wine again – more intense – I see pictures in my mind as this wine moves over the palate. Bravo!
2015 Puligny-Montrachet Corvées des Vignes
A deeper nose, some vibration here. Fresh, lovely open complexity. Growing intensity. This is beautiful wine, even if I love the last more!

You should go back and taste the Gravieres Blanc – if you see pictures with Beaurepaire, you’ll see landscapes with Gravieres!
