Nathalie on 2013:
“It’s a Burgundian vintage because of its nice acidity – from that perspective 2010 and 2012 are similar. I think that the 2013 reds will need more time than either of those two vintages – like 1991 did. Perhaps it’s difficult to understand these wines at the beginning – it’s not unripe but the tannins are present – but that shouldn’t be a problem as there’s enough body.

“A vintage with character, for aging.”

The wines…

There is oak-spice to be seen in a number of these wines – but they are a little behind in their elevage versus an average year. Still the overall quality is excellent here – fine wines for sure.

2013 Bourgogne Rouge
An important cuvée as it now accounts for 3 hectares, the vines in Chorey – and there was no hail in Chorey. 25% new oak used in the elevage here, and bottling will commence in January.
A deep, inviting and faintly spicy note. Fresh and energetic and with a fine intensity for the label. A very gourmand, super-tasting wine.

2013 Chorey-lès-Beaune
Quite big aromas with a fine accompanying florality, minerality and spice. More fruit intensity and depth of flavour. Long and pretty wine.

2013 Chorey-lès-Beaune Piece du Chapitre
2 hectares.
Another nose with faint but inviting spice. A more mineral palate than the previous Chorey. Good, mouth-watering flavour that’s narrower but longer. Very lovely.

2013 Savigny-lès-Beaune
This small parcel is not normally shown, but given that the few grapes saved from the devastated 1er Crus ended up in this:
A narrower aroma but of quite some depth. Good texture and a wide panorama of flavour. There’s good complexity here and a fine finish too. Lovely!

2013 Beaune 1er Clos du Roi
Deep, round and a little floral. Fresh with growing intensity and some padding to the texture. A fine and intense mid-palate with very good finishing flavour that’s more floral. Lovely.

2013 Beaune 1er Les Grèves
Lost half the parcel to hail. Family and employees picked all 1 day before the pickers arrived. didn’t destem as they were afraid of crushing the grapes.
Spicy oak and faint flowers on the nose. Full and round in the mouth, with very good concentration and a growing intensity of flavour. Long and slightly floral finishing. The last drops in the glass showing the whole cluster aromas.

2013 Aloxe-Corton
Round, involving and inviting nose. Here is a lovely line of concentrated flavour – without much padding and only modest tannin. A very good finish – this is lovely.

2013 Aloxe-Corton 1er Les Vercots
More spicy barrel aromas. A little mineral and certainly more direct and narrow in the mouth. MOre tannin and intensity too. A racehorse of a wine, but today with muddy feet from the tannin – it begs a little patience.

2013 Aloxe-Corton 1er Fournières
Here is more aromatic weight of fruit. Silkier and again mineral, but wow! There’s a super extra flavour dimension in the mid-palate. This is really excellent!

2013 Corton
There’s a faint reduction here, but quite some depth too.
Full round and mouth-watering with the flavour of dark-red fruit. Lots of mid-palate power and long finishing too. Very good!

2013 Corton-Bressandes
A wide and airy nose with some flowers. More lithe and longer – both in shape and real length. Fruit-driven, still with plenty of tannin, but very open. Yum!

Les blancs…

2013 Bourgogne Blanc
A tiny production due to bad flowering for chardonnay in Chorey.
A wide and inviting, slightly padded nose. A growing freshness from the core. Okay…

2013 Corton-Charlemagne
4 barrels instead of 5 – not too bad in the context of the vintage.
Very pretty, wide and fresh nose. Here is lots of depth of flavour, concentration and interest. I’m interested!!!
