David on 2013:
“Not much to say; we managed to achieve 18 hl/ha, though some of the 1ers yielded so little that they ended up in the Bourgogne!”

The wines…

Not all the malos wer finished here, but David was ‘confident’ that they would be done by the end of the year! Father Daniel noted, with a smile – the 69s took 18 months to finish! 😉

2013 Bourgogne Maison Dieu
From vines in Pommard, under Perrières near Château Pommard.
Fresh, pretty and very pinot. There’s a nice core of fruit and fine intensity afterwards.

2013 Pommard
From parcels across the commune.
The nose is a little tight – the palate definitely isn’t; bright and punchy, croquant fruit. Some tannic structure but nothing harsh – excellent!

2013 Beaune 1er Vignes-Franches
From vines planted in 1927 and 1974.A fine, punchy aroma of bright fruit cushioned with faint florals. Also bright in the mouth, some structure, but mainly gorgeous fruit.

2013 Volnay
From 2 1920 vines, more than half of which is 1er Cru Lurets Рbut as they already have 3 1ers, this is all folded into this villages cuv̩e.
A more modest nose, but o less perfumed. Silkier, intense and sinewy wine – lots of material here – super. It’s a great finish and it leaves just a little tannin on the tongue. Yum!

2013 Volnay 1er Mitans
A mix of Mitans and Ormeau.
Here is a heavier perfume – but real perfume. More dimension on the palate, lovely intensity – set apart by an excellent extra dimension of flavour in the mid-palate – super!

2013 Volnay 1er Santenots
A rounder, tighter nose but with plenty of discrete concentration. A little too much gas here, a drag (not grain) of tannin plus a weight of fruit in the mid-palate. The finish is loaded with tasty, dark red fruit – hard to say more with the bubbles though.

2013 Volnay 1er Caillerets
A wide and deep nose – ripe dark cherry fruit. Fainter gas than the Santenots, if similar tannin. The finish here is more direct and dynamic today – uh, and did I say tasty? it’s very tasty!

2013 Pommard 1er Clos Micault
Only 5 producers of this cru.
Faint reduction can’t hide a very, very pretty and slightly floral nose. Wide, energetic and super flavour that just stays ahead of the tannin. Lovely.

2013 Pommard 1er Clos des Arvelets
Lots of aromatic interest here. More direct but also with some minerality to add to the fresh fruit flavour. Very tasty with a completely different shape to the Micault.

2013 Pommard 1er Grands Epenots
Very pretty and perfumed – it’s a high-toned aromatic over a hard base of fruit. Silky, sinewy wine. The shape is similar to the Arvelets with flashes of fine fruit over a more mineral, slightly saline base. The last drops with lovely perfume!

A couple of 12s…

2012 Volnay
Massively perfumed. Super in the mouth with silk, lots of concentration and a saltiness. The flavour is fresh and very long but also just a little monolithic today – to wait for!

2012 Volnay 1er Les Caillerets
Hmm, gorgeous, textured aromatic depth – there are layers of aroma here. Again there’s concentration, minerality and just a little padding to the texture. Very, very long – the flavour easily outlasting the structure. Brilliant!

And just for fun!

1976 Pommard 1er Grands Epenots
Tasted blind – I guessed a 71 Pommard…
Round, gorgeous, mature and sweet aromas – just about a perfect nose with more sweetness than leaves – with time there’s a little dried raisin fruit too. Round, full in shape with a few savoury notes and perfect sweetness – not just for fun – for a treat!

Agree? Disagree? Anything you'd like to add?
