Tasted in Beaune with Antoine and Roxanne – Emmanuel had decided it was better to be on his tractor somewhere – the 30th October, 2014.

Emmanuel Giboulot, together with Jean-Claude Rateau, is one of the pioneers of, first, organic and then biodynamic viticulture in Burgundy – he began in about 1985 with just one hectare of vines. Today, his 10-plus hectares of vines have been treated this way for almost 30 years, so it is no surprise that he was not so keen to spray insecticide against the flavescence d’orée this year.
A shame I missed him, I’d have loved to get a little more insight into his thinking – both before and after the various court-cases, et cetera.
The wines…
The winemaking practiced by Giboulot is, perhaps unsurprisingly, also rather ‘non-interventionist’ with modest use of sulfur and often with whole clusters used for the reds. The volume of red and whites here is virtually identical. The whites had been bottled in mid-September.
2013 Terres Burgondes
A wine from pinot beurot (gris!).
A fresh and modest nose. The palate is similar – quite simple – but it finishes with a pretty and lingering note.
2013 Côte de Beaune La Combe d’Eve
The nose is deep and ripe but takes on more subtlety with time in the glass. Round but with a lovely line of flavour through the middle. This flavour defines the wine – and it’s a very fine definition.
2013 Rully
The nose is a little nutty yet fresh with a little ripe lemon. It seems more mineral and has a lovely growing freshness. This is lovely!
Les Rouges…
2013 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits En Grégoire
The aromas are wide and fresh with a little herb. Fresh in the mouth too but with dark fruit tos start with. The fruit is bright and pretty in the finish. Quite good for a 2013 Hautes Côtes.
Prettier red fruit – a very nice nose. Round and silky, with good freshness and a nice twist of sucrosité evening out the bright finish – actually this becomes a lovely finish.
2013 Beaune Lulune
The nose is a little reduced but shows good width. Fresh in the mouth and a little rounder – good fine tannin. Another wine with ‘dark’ reduced fruit but finish is lovely and lingering. Very tasty – this should end up super.
A tight but quite mineral nose. Lovely freshness, allied to sweet fruit. Detailed, wide and long-finishing. This wine is a honey – such a shame that there are only 2 barrels!
2013 St.Romain
This smells a little like there should be some whole-cluster action – but there were none in the fermentation – with pretty red fruits. Fresh and detailed, with good red fruit again and a fine persistence of flavour with a faint texture of tannin underneath.
