The ‘Château’ of Bouchard Père et Fils has large walled, fenced-off gardens. You can get tantalising views as you walk their perimeter on the ring-road of Beaune.

In the summer I thought to myself – I’ll ask if I can get a tour. In the end, they just opened the gate and said – ‘help yourself!’

I’d assumed a large gardening staff were needed – and of-course that is true – but all is outsourced. The teams are here every week during the growing season. I’d love the little house with its own driveway that’s set in the gardens!
