Christine was in good form today. We looked at a trio of 2014 whites and then some reds from 2013…
2014 Pernand-Vergelesses Blanc
From 4 different parcels. Half barrel and half tank fermented.
A bright, floral nose, open and inviting. Here is not so much sweetness, rather a mineral intensity. Tasty and not a bit facile.
A more textured nose, clearly some oak but fine and inviting. Bigger in the mouth, more intense, more saline, layered flavour. This is really top form in 14 – wow.
On the Pernand side of the hill.
The nose is tighter, but deeper. A more opulent palate; fabulous texture, finely balanced. Rich, saline, especially in the finish… Wow, perfectly in the domaine vernacular, a richer Berthet, direct and fresh…
Les Rouges…
2013 Pernand-Vergelesses Clos Berthet
Remember that only whites from this vineyard are allowed to be called 1er cru.
Beautiful, floral nose – deep with fruit too. Lovely, open, fine pinot fruit, mouth-watering flavour. Just a super-tasty wine.
2013 Volnay
Christine’s mum’s parents came from Pommard, hence the Pommard and Volnay. This contains Carelles, Brouillards, Lurets – both 1er and villages – plus Grand Champs.
Deep, some flowers, a modest mineral vibration. Slowly growing flowers. A lithe, slightly muscular impression, lots of flavour dimension. Long flavoured. Very yum, with faint oak finish.
Nicely floral, really pretty – really, really pretty! Lots of flavour dimension, long finishing. Super wine.
A deep, more heavily perfumed floral note – more roses than violets. Lovely shape in the mouth, fine, mineral line, super length. I often think this the top wine at this address, despite the Cortons that follow…
A beautiful, modest but clean nose of fruit and flowers. Extra power and richness, filling every corner. Okay, clearly another level after the Pommard – this year!
