Tasting with the Punition Collective

Update 25.12.2020(1.5.2020)billn

A tasting in Beaune, 11 March 2020 – during the last days that France remained open! I got there very early, before many producers had opened their bottles, so managed to leave before the crowds arrived.

2018 Chorey-lès-Beaune Blanc
Hmm, a fresh, lovely, inviting nose – yes! Lovely drive and energy in the mouth too, with plenty of concentration, layered, intense – ooh thats good. Finishing with some oak today, but no problem.

2018 Pernand-Vergelesses Les Pins
That little reductive twist that you so-often see with Pernand whites – so nice. More driving energy and freshness in the mouth, holding well in the finish, similar oak style to the Chorey, long again. It’s the aroma that really differentiates today…

2016 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Aux Vergelesses
A deeper, but narrower nose with some nice freshness here, even growing more floral – nice. Wide, energetic and concentrated. Very good. The oak less overt here.

2017 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Sous Fretile
An airier, wider nose. Vibrant, more energy, but the flavour melting impressively over the palate – salty and wide. A super finish – long. Love this wine!

2017 Corton-Charlemagne
Hmm, thats good – perfumed too. Extra of everything in the mouth – wow intensity! A wide, concentrated and ingraining flavour. So long – not a large-scaled finish, but soo long…

Les Rouges:

2016 2018 Chorey-lès-Beaune
Ooh, a cordial fruit nose – pure and sweetly inviting. Concentrated, a little structure and a great core of fruit, widening to a fresh panorama of slightly mineral flavour. That’s a great Chorey!

2017 Beaune Les Bonnes Feuvres
Wider, more open and with more forward fruit too. Lovely, open and energetic. Actually this is less intense than the Chorey, but simply delicious.

2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Connardises
A more modest volume of aroma – slowly showing some sweetness. More mineral, very fresh and open, yet this is a wine to wait for, for its very mineral and mouth-watering finish and more structured showing…

2017 Pommard Vaumuriens
Fuller and deeper – a more involving nose. Some oak in the flavour that recalls the style of the whites. Yet there’s great shape and balance here – wait a couple of years more – I think this excellent – indeed it has a great finish.

2017 Beaune 1er Reversées
A little more open in the higher perfumes here. More depth to the flavour, structured but well-covered by the fruit. Great texture – thats really excellent – you should be patient for sure, but here is high-class Beaune – bravo!

2016 Corton-Renardes
More concentrated, a little tighter too perhaps, but this nose is becoming perfumed with aeration. Wide, mineral, but with fine depth of flavour too. Extra depth of flavour. Super length – a proper grand cru – the only parcel of the domaine not frosted in 2016!

2018 Petit Chablis
Quite a big nose – there’s a weight here. Mouth-filling, delicious flavour, mouth-watering flavour! That’s lovely. A certain finishing sweetness but long and delicious flavoured.

2018 Chablis
A faint savoury edge to the aromas. Fresh, good drive, a depth of flavour with some sweetness too. Long – thats a super finish again.

2017 Chablis 1er Beauroy
A finer nose, though a smaller nose. More mineral, a little more direct, very nice over the palate. Excellent.

2017 Chablis Grains Dorés
30 months of elevage.
A nice floral impression with this fresh nose. Narrower, lovely line, melting, less mineral, but delicious.

2017 Chablis 1er Côte de Jouan
Thats nice (again!) – a little floral too – this has a lovely nose. A fine sweetness and there’s width of flavour here too – fine and pure – mineral for sure. Delicious finishing – super!

2017 Chablis 1er Mont de Milieu
This needs a little swirling, but it’s worth it – becoming beautifully floral. An extra depth of concentration showing here – this has lots and lots of concentration! Super, but give it time to open more…

2017 Chablis 1er Fourchaume
Here is some oak – but a nice yellow fruit too. In the mouth, this moves beautifully over the palate, but I find it a bit oaky here too. Tons of flavour and great shape though.

2016 Chablis Vaudesir
Ooh – floral – great perfume – fantastic. Depth of concentrated f.avour – slowly mouth-watering, big, less ‘giving’ in the flavour. Such a great nose, excellent in the middle, then fine finishing. This has the potential for great!

2017 Bourgogne Aligoté Les Tilleuils
A little floral. Good in the mouth, a touch of oak but very modest at this stage – much less than 1 year ago. This wine is on its way to goodness, but I won’t touch my magnums for at least another 5 years!

2017 Santenay 1er Clos Rousseau
A deep nose, a little earthy, becoming sweeter. This is big, fresh and impressive in the mouth – long, mouth-watering and a little mineral. That’s lovely.

I’d recently tasted most of the range on show, but here was something new:

2019 Bourgogne Aligote ‘Skin Contact’
Made in a 600-litre demi-muid, grapes from domaine vines in the Hautes Côtes domaine – not yet bottled.
Very perfumed – attractively herbed too – thats lovely. Lots of mouth-filling volume, a good energy, lots of wine here – its clearly not chardonnay but I’m still not sure that I’d guess aligoté either. Delicious! Even a little finishing tannin too!

Domaine Guy Amiot & Fils

Guy Amiot ChassagneTasted with Thierry Amiot, but with a (too) unflattering photo.

2017 Bourgogne Aligoté Les Grands Champs
Vines from 1935, planted by grandfather, all tank elevage.
Easy, floral and sweet, nice. Good width and energy, thats very tasty aligoté – highly recommendable!

2017 Bouzeron Les Bouillots
A hint more floral, certainly more mineral. Wider, similar energy – here with the impression of a little oak. Great finishing flavour though. Just give this another year, or two.

2017 Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles-Vignes
About 1.5 ha in total, but thats from about 7 parcels.
Less width but more depth of aroma. Deeply flavoured too long, to wait for, but this is already more open.

2017 Santenay Blanc Vieilles-Vignes
A tighter nose. Tighter, more mineral and lots of energy on the palate. I like the fresh intensity here – this is a mineral and quite super wine.

2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Les Macherelles
Wider, a little more oak – layered depth of flavour here.

2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Les Vergers
Higher toned aroma – a bit more oak here too. Mineral, wide, this has concentration again – super wine to wait for, but I think it will be great!

2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Les Caillerets
There’s freshness and some extra aromatic minerality here – it’s a narrow but good nose. More complex than the previous, if with less depth of overt concentration. Long, long, finishing. Excellent wine.

Domaine Laurent Cognard

A domaine with 5 hectares from the Mâconnais out of 17.5 hectares in total:

2018 Montagny and Co 1er Cru
3 different 1ers in one parcel
A mineral, narrow nose. A little reductive but still with a fine and vibrant flavour. Long and good finishing this is a good one!

2018 Montagny 1er Les Bassets
A finer but quite small nose of citrus minerality. Wide, good intensity too – certainly a mineral wine.

2018 Montagny 1er Le Vieux Château
A little extra aromatic citrus here. An extra depth of sweet citrus energy on the palate too. This is lovely. Intense in the finish – that’s a great Montagny!

2018 Montagny 1er Clos du Vieux Château
A clos on the hill above the previous, with more oak in the elevage.
The nose is a little rounder, with a hint of oak. More supple, lots of concentration, wide, melting – thats very good – but for today be patient. Today I’d definitely take the previous wine ahead of this.

2018 Pouilly-Loché Aux Barres
A little extra aromatic sweetness. Supple, less strict, melting over the palate, concentrated but balanced wine here – but wait a while – tasty all the same.

2018 Pouilly-Loché Origines
The same as the last but only vines from 1935
Not a big nose, but a certain silkiness. A little extra precision. That’s fine, melting, mouth-watering. Super – excellent wine!

Les Rouges:

2018 Bourgogne Pinot Noir
Hmm – concentrated, but with a little floral wink too. This has a little grain of tannin and fresh flavour with plenty of depth – this is an excellent Bourgogne!

2018 Bourgogne Pinot Noir Cuvée Leonel
Grapes from the same parcel but from vine that have only very small grapes.
This is aromatically more open and fresh, it’s very attractive. A little more tannin but also more energy too – more purity of fruit. Very long. That’s lovely again but here is a fresher style to the fruit.

A super but very young set of 2017s!

2017 Ladoix Les Chaillots
Hmm, thats a nice perfume. Bright, fresh, incisive red fruit almost. A lovely and direct minerality in the finish too. That’s fine.

2017 Chorey-lès-Beaune
A little more concentrated but less giving. Extra-wide, cool fruit, a wine of structure but the tannin practically without grain. Thats a big finish too – a wine for patience – wait 3 years… lots of wine!

2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune Vieilles-Vignes
A little more perfume here. Plenty of stricture but freshness and drive too. Again the tannin with almost no grain. Super.

2017 Pommard Les Chanière
A compact nose but with some attractive florals escaping the glass. Driving and fresh flavoured, lots of tannin but (again) no grain – energy and super freshness. Another wine to wait for – super!

2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune Blanc
A nose of energy, of herb, of fruit too – complex. Nice drive and energy here. Layered finishing despite the freshness. Super!
