Pommard premier crus (almost exclusively!) from 2012, all tasted on 21 March, 2014 in Pommard.
Really great strength in-depth here. Some of the best from this village that I’ve ever experienced…
2012 Vaudoisey-Creusefond, Pommard Les Charmots
Deep, a super, dark depth. A slightly padded texture before brilliant mid-palate concentration. Powerful wine. If I must criticise it needs a bit more dynamism today – but really, this is quite something.
2012 Fernand et Laurent Pillot, Pommard Clos des Vergers
Medium-plus colour. The nose is wide and slightly floral. A lovely, padded concentration in the mouth. Growing intensity and good energy. Yum!
2012 Fernand et Laurent Pillot, Pommard Les Charmots
The nose is modest. Not so the flavours: ripe tannin, power, lithe and muscular with concentrated, fresh fruit. This is very long. I have a tiny preference for the Clos des Vergers today.
2012 Fernand et Laurent Pillot, Pommard Rugiens
A dark nose, whose depth of aroma grows ever-wider and fresher. In the mouth this seems somehow softer yet more concentrated that the other wines from the domaine. A really brilliant burst of fresh flavour in the mid-palate. Very super!
2012 Parigot, Pommard Les Charmots
A rather shy nose, maybe with a faintly growing toast. Again, very good concentration and here a faint saltiness and minerality. Overall, an understated but very competent wine.
2012 Jean-Louis Moissenet-Bonnard, Pommard Pezerolles
Rather floral nose – it’s very pretty. Silky with a growing well of tannin that has a little ‘grab’ rather than grain. Fine, wide and fresh fruit – quite elegant in this context – village and vintage!
2012 Chantal Lescure, Pommard Les Bertins
Deep, dark, oaked, slight reduction – yet, actually quite lovely – I’m surprised too! Wide with good concentration and a faint astringency. The fruit is in there somewhere though – a good red fruit note rises from the empty glass. Good potential here.
A wide nose with a heavy, heady perfume – that’s the whole clusters – but there’s a growing aromatic elegance. Super texture. Concentrated, with velvet tannin, growing intensity and a beautiful length. Wow!
2012 Lejeune, Pommard Les Argillières
Here the nose is higher-toned. The palate round, slightly fat. There’s a slowly growing well of tannin, faintly astringent – the fruit fights its way through from the core of the wine. Today the tannin has the upper hand, but there’s nothing to worry about…
The nose is big, very well fruited and with good freshness too. There’s a real depth of aroma here. Silky with ripe, fine tannin and lovely fruit – super in the mid-palate. Really long, then even longer! Chapeau!
2012 Jean-Luc Joillot, Pommard Noizons (Not a 1er!)
A nice, interesting, peppery, floral note. This is not far behind the 1ers; plenty of tannin and a slowly growing intensity of fruit that is quite mouth-watering in the middle. Super fruit in the finish.
Wide, fresh and faintly floral – quite elegant. Soft textured yet clearly structured – and with beautiful fruit too. Wide, wider then even wider – oh, and long too! Just super…
2012 Cyrot-Buthiau, Pommard l’Exception
A blend of 1ers due to low harvest in 2012.
Wide, beautifully composed nose with a twist of florality. Full, not too structured, a faint salinity too. There’s a core of good concentrated fruit too. Super wine.
2012 de Courcel, Pommard Grand Clos Epenots
Full, round, floral, whole-cluster aromatic – super pretty. The tannin is forward, just a little sticky and faintly astringent. The fruit is simply gorgeous. You’ll have to wait for this one, but it will be worth it!
2012 Comte Armand, Pommard Clos des Epeneaux
Some high tones and some depth too – a narrow but long line of aromatic. Plenty of velvet, silky tannin – it grabs your mouth but then melts away to leave the elegant, fine fruit. No powerhouse but very, very pretty. I’m surprised how gorgeous this wine is, in the context of both vintage and Cru. Beautiful!
2012 Château de Meursault, Pommard Clos des Epenots
A wide, beautifully fruited nose. Wide in the mouth and with relatively modest tannin. A growing intensity of fruit – it’s not my favourite fruit, but it holds very well into the finish. Very fine!
2012 Denis Carré, Pommard Les Charmots
Lovely, round, fairly modest but engaging nose – hints of flowers. The fruit is less sweet on the palate versus many, but it’s long and penetrating – actually a super wine.
2012 Brigitte Berthelemot, Pommard Noizons (Not a 1er!)
The nose is wide, filled with faintly spiced high-toned fruit of good intensity. Full and round with good sweetness. Not the finest-grained tannin but tasty. Indeed, very tasty!
