Vincent on 2020:
“The 2020 vintage was both early and dry, Some frost to start the year – we lit candles twice though had no obvious losses – we were often very early out of bed though! No blocking of maturity that I could discern, and not too high degrees. I’d say that we have a rather classic balance.”
Vincent on 2019:
“2019 similar to 2018, the same sort of balance, but half the volume of wine. The particularity was the dryness, the canicule put the vines on standby for a while. There’s a bit more verve and present minerality, which is important but both had good maturities so I don’t really see a difference in concentration – I’m happy and I think the consumers will be agreeably surprised despite wines that flirt with 14° – you don’t note the alcohol – sun in the bottles can work! Some dried grapes to remove at harvest time, actually quite a lot in 2019.”
The wines…
No surprises – a great selection.
The grand crus had just been moved to tank for bottling, so Vincent prefered not to touch/show them:”
2019 Petit Chablis
Only a little earlier bottling vs the rest – a couple of months.
That’s a deep nose, with a modest accent of oak too. Round, easing over the palate, a modest tannin at the base. With a very pretty finishing line of flavour thats almost juicy. Yum!
2019 Chablis
Here more width and freshness of aroma. More driving, wider and fresher – this is very easy and supple over the palate, bubbling with energy. Understated but beautifully pure and long. The last notes a little saline. This is very long.
All these bottled three weeks ago:
2019 Chablis 1er Sechets
An elegant width of aroma – very easy but attractive. More direct again, the minerality soft at the edges but very attractive. Fine silky volume in the middle and a nicely chalky texture in the finish. Lovely
‘Obtained these vines in 1979, it was a fatter wine and not really in the style of the house at that time – I didn’t think that it was a wine for ageing at the start – but I was wrong!’
Ooh – now that’s an exciting nose – mineral and vibrant. Another level of direct, melting – mouth-watering with the citrus and more overt minerality. Practically juicy finishing with a small touch of salinity – bravo!
The 7th vintage – ‘a very small plot.’
Wider deeper, lots of minerality on show, almost a spicy smoke too. Each wine mounts with directness and minerality here with an almost creamy texture to the flavour – super tasty, yet a faint austerity vs the Vaillons, very long… Faintly phenolic texture at the end of the tongue. Great wine again but for longer keeping.
2019 Chablis 1er Forêts
A vertical nose, deeper and higher tones but more narrow. A grain of tannin here, a wine that mounts in tension, growing in the mouth. Wide and a mineral that, like the last, is a little more austere. The finish is juicy again, agrume fruit and slowly mouthwatering right to the end…
No 2019 grand crus today – so how about some 2018s?
2018 Petit Chablis
Not a large nose but very clean. Mouth-filling, super energy – almost more mineral the 19 shows today. Wide and tasty with some finishing intensity.
2018 Chablis
Also a nose thats open and clean but showing very little. Very wide, obviously mineral. A little more depth and maybe a concentration vs the 19, the 19 slightly more tasty today.. extra long though.
A nose thats showing some depth of riper yellow fruit. Super mineral, wow chablis. Thats showing brilliantly – lovely finishing energy with some salinity.
These noses are tight but here’s a bit more width. Mineral, clarity of flavour – super finishing intensity. Bravo again.
2018 Chablis 1er Montée de Tonnerre
I see a little floral accent here. More scale, more mouth-filling, plenty of energy. Really strong finishing – super
2018 Chablis 1er Forêts
Iodine, florals, saline – not so forward but certainly complex. Mouth-filling again, a little softer side to the structure here, but structure all the same. Great finish!
Here is complexity – wide, lots to find. Very silky, more depth to this texture, and of course concentration – very long and engaging. Bravo, though a contemplative wine all the same.
A lower strength of aroma, but very attractive. Super energy, mouth-filling, nice,y textured everything, but nothing in excess. A great finish here – bravo…
Something for the road:
Round, lots of development, faint mushroom. Extra in the mouth, the tannin, growing in complexity and energy – a burst of energy – minerality and faint tannin – it’s Preuses 2000 – the tannin for me is chalky and says Preuses says Vincent
