Today it was raining – a lot; Nathalie arrived in full ‘rain-gear’ from the vines – and seemed happy to be pouring some wine, rather than pruning!

Nathalie on 2016:
Here we had a bit of everything, 30% was lost to frost, though some parcels delivered only 5 hl/ha! It was the second hail that hit here, so in some places the right bank lost everything – it was like winter. At the end we have 17 hl/ha vs a usual 50+. Some parcels had mildew, and there was a little sun-burn in Vaucopins. But at least we avoided oïdium! We can’t recover too much from this vintage so we have to make some increase to the prices of the 2015s – just a little, to help. The wines are still in fermentation, but it wasn’t easy as there were first, second and even third generation bunches!

Nathalie on 2015:
“Almost a perfect vintage in quantity, of-course it was a warm vintage. The hail missed us, but the rain was welcome for bringing some equilibrium to the small grapes. We’ve a nice acidity and just a little amertume (bitterness). I would almost say it would be hard to make something poor in 2015, though I like more of a challenge so from that viewpoint it wouldn’t be my favourite vintage. But they are charming wines with real Chablis depth.”

The wines…

A super selection chez Oudin – like every year. Just a super address.

2015 Chablis
About 12 parcels are assembled here, and this represents about 65% of the domaine’s production.
Bold and fresh, faintly saline, more than faintly mineral, bottled in December. Ooh, this has fine volume and a beautiful texture, a little floral, fine line and intensity. Modestly citrus, caressing wine. Long, much more mineral finishing. Holding very well. This is excellent!

2015 Chablis Les Serres
A long elevage cuvée, was bottled in August. Not a full rendement in 15 as it was a little too hot during the flowering – some days 40 degrees.
Wide, beautifully saline, fresh, tighter below. Ooh, what line, mineral and citrus complexity, then comes the salinity. More volume in the finish, fine texture, saline and beautiful. Bravo, top villages!
2015 Chablis 1er Vaugiraut
Two parcels; one of 65 years, a third in volume, and the other part, 35 years old.
A big, open mix of flowers and minerals, faintly citrus fruited. Bigger in the mouth, super silky, slightly cushioned texture. Really a super mid-palate that’s mouth-watering and utterly delicious. Really a very floral wine with a weight of finishing flavour too.

2015 Chablis 1er Vaucoupins
A more classic, seashore freshness, it’s a fine, pure, direct nose. In the mouth this has really a lot of volume – mouth-watering, growing intensity, the fruit is ripe a little agrume in style and slowly adding more salinity. Apple for sure, but I surprise myself by slightly preferring the latter. Fine mineral finish. Simply a lovely wine.
