Charly on the 2015s:
“The 2015 harvest was early, but not so hurried as we thought it would be when we got back from our holidays! In the end we harvested the cremant early, and it was almost 10 days later that we began harvesting in Chablis. We think it will be good year in terms of aromas, roundness and richness – it lacks a bit of acidity and may not be a vintage to keep. Two small parcels were hit by hail in Fleys but compared to other domaines we were very lucky. There was a massive difference in just a few metres; our Mont de Milieu was fine, but the facing Montée de Tonnerre was badly affected. We have bought some Bougros in must, but we were lucky that it wasn’t hit. We harvested until 12th. So far we’ve seen a ‘blend’ of malos; some fast, some under way, some not yet started.”

Charly on the 2014s:
“I think the 2014s can be kept very much longer than the 2015s – with 2014 and 2015 the most and least acid since 2008 when I started. We have better yields than 2012 and 2013 but definitely not extravagant – we were never close to the maximum allowed rendement. Whilst this is a ‘more alive’ vintage, they seem a little more closed today.”

The wines…

Almost everything is already bottled: 500 litre barrels for the Chablis and 400 litre barrels for the 1ers. A fine set of wines – really.

2014 Petit Chablis
From plateau above Fleys. This bottled in September, though there’s more than one mise. Quite a long elevage here – quite serious I might say. ‘We make elevage here like it was a 1er cru.’
Deep and quite perfumed. Round but nice layers of flavour. This is very pretty and easy to enjoy today – yum! Lovely finishing wine – long line.
2014 Chablis
About 12 hectares represented by this wine, so needs two bottlings, the second is about 2 months later.
Wide and faintly salty, a depth and concentration is hinted at, but only that. Lovely width, fine, supple, mouth-wrapping energy. Very fine texture then a peak of super-tasty flavour. Excellent. This rests beautifully on the palate.

2014 Chablis les Fourneaux
Two parcels overlooking the village of Fleys – steep, south-facing, and very warm in the summer.
A deep, vibrant nose of fresh but ripe citrus fruit. Layered, waves of very fine flavour – excellent again. Lovely layers of flavour even after you swallow, just a faint accent of salinity. Super

2014 Chablis 1er Mont de Milieu
Also direct south-facing with less clay than Fourneaux but with more limestone. The domaine’s oldest vines are here, indeed virtually all are old vines.
A freshness of aroma, hinting at a riper depth, but only hinting. Big but detailed, fresh but interesting and complex. Here is a finely boned and delivered wine that is in one contemplative but also expressive. I’m liking this very much! I’m liking the finish even more – really excellent!
