Pommard Grands Epenots

1999 Rebourgeon-Mure Pommard Grands Epenots

Beautiful aromas ; depth, some tobacco, soft but detailed fruit with a hint of caramel. Some sweetness, still some tannin but everything is secondary to the sweet core of ripe fruit. Long too. There’s more than a suggestion of maturity to this beautiful wine.

I can’t quite put my finger on one component of this unusual nose; there’s plenty of red fruit with a slight mushroom below – it gets prettier and prettier in the glass – I’m almost only sniffing! Lots of very fine tannin abuts interesting ripe fruit flavours with some added dried fruits in there. Not the longest finishing, but the aromas are individual and lovely.

A much tighter nose. Plenty of tannin – but it’s not chewy. Darker, more concentrated fruit. This spent longer in older barrels to ‘polish’ the tannins a little. Tasty, though certainly requiring a little bottle age.

Medium, medium-plus colour. This nose is also rather tight but there seems more depth to the fruit. Structured and intense, the lingering fruit flavours are lovely. Needs cellar time for sure, but it’s a good bottle.
