Echézeaux

2006 Comte Liger-Belair Echézeaux

Much aromatic complexity – warming the glass brings more density of fruit. Full but balanced, supple concentration – another wine of understated but impressive length. Less ‘woody’ than a bottle last September – just lovely, covetable wine.

Width though not that much depth to the aromatics. A pretty red and black fruit mix, and super width on the palate. Very fine expansion into the mid-plate before slowly lingering. Makes a strong impression.

Medium-plus colour. High-toned and faintly medicinal aromas. In the mouth it’s soft and concentrated with an excellent undertow of structure. Super dimension in the mid-palate – it will need plenty of cellar time for the dark oak to fade with the tannin, but it’s very good.

Medium, medium-pale colour. A lovely, wide nose of spice, caramel and fruit. The texture is not particularly sophisticated, but the concentration and dimension are super. Clearly overpriced, but super wine

2006 Clos Frantin Echézeaux

Deep colour. Tight, a suggestion of depth but little more. Full-bodied, with good texture and very good fruit. There’s plenty of structure to resolve, but the finish lingers well and has a savoury edge.

There is real depth on the nose – like the Gaudichots. More tannin providing extra texture, but there is a more open display of flavour over the palate. Showing much better than any of the Vosne Crus.
