Medium garnet but it still retains more than an edge of cherry-red. The nose impresses with lovely high-toned fruit over a deeper base – it starts with a twist of black, but gets redder and finer all the while – eventually I even find wild strawberry, a common descriptor for pinot, but one that I rarely find. This wine shows an impressive level of concentration to go with its smooth texture. There’s plenty of oak artifacts on the finish – vanilla cream – but it’s very long for a village wine and continues to impress as the glass empties. What differentiates this from other ‘beautifully oaked’ wines is the fresh, complex and compelling ‘Chambolle’ fruit on the nose – devoid of oak. I remember this being relatively expensive, but it’s a wine that I can say I wish I had more of. Smooth and ‘giving’ there’s definitely no rush to drink this.

Short note two days after drinking. This was drunk together with the 99 Chambolle from Barthod. Just a little deeper in colour. The nose is more diffuse but seems to have more going on. The palate is not so focused, but matches the concentration of the Barthod then takes on another dimension – a really fantastic, many faceted finish – a real surprise, overall (just) bettering the 99, but perhaps less long-lived.

Medium cherry-red. There’s a hint of briar but mostly the wine majors on red, powdery fruit. Fresh, nice acidity and texture. The fruit is ripe and elegantly proportioned. The medium tannins still give a little grab. Young, primary and elegant to boot.

From a half bottle, I have a soft spot for this wine in halves, very handy. Medium red and still quite young looking. The nose has quite some depth, just a little powdery perhaps but digs up spade-fulls of red fruit. The palate is equally giving, depth, interesting creamy length and not too much tannin. I’d still leave this another year or two, but from a half it’s drinking pretty well. On the finish, not the extra dimension of the 1999, but this comes close and is a rewarding drink – I stocked up on a few more – you can’t beat having a few halves available.

A wine with two faces. Medium plus ruby-red that’s shaded to cherry-red at the rim. The nose is of deep red fruit, cherry and a lovely redcurrant note, slightly over the top vanilla for the first few minutes fading to leave nice oaky notes and faint espresso coffee. The palate is one of those sumptuous, slightly fat, fruit-forward wines, but lovely red fruit and beautifully balanced acidity. The finish shows a creamy, dried red cherry and raisin note – very nice. And the second face? – a grainy oaky texture develops with food – so drink on its own, but it’s worth it.

Medium-plus cherry red. The nose starts a little oaky, mostly dispersing to show high toned red fruit against the milder oak. The fruit becomes more and more intense as the wine warms in the glass and takes on a coffee edge. In the mouth the oak is bordering on intrusive giving a slight grain to the sweet palate, but the fruit and acidity balance make this wine just so succulent. Still a little oaky bitterness on the finish. I don’t think Nicolas often overdoes the oak, and this wine is so close to being an excellent villages but I’m not sure if the wood or the wine will be the winner.

Medium cherry red. Cherry and pretty red fruits. The palate shows good acidity, medium tannins and a little coffee on the finish. Very 2000 and very nice. Not a big wine, but a rich creamy finish to remember it by.

Medium cherry red. The nose is a forward mix of cherries, cassis, oak and faint vanilla. Very smooth, slightly oaky and concentrated palate. The acidity is adequate and the medium density tannins are very fine. A very long finish. Priced higher than many 1er Cru’s – but probably worth the outlay. Excellent villages. I’d suggest leaving 3 or 4 years to tone down the oak influence which I find a little ‘blurring’, but no rush to drink for several years there-after.
